It was supposed to be different this time around.
With the collapse of Affliction complete and the list of suitable non-UFC opponents dwindling, the top heavyweight in the world, Fedor Emelianenko, seemed likely to finally sign with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. However despite early reports suggesting that a deal was imminent, we stand here with the two sides as distant as ever, and it comes as no surprise.

Josh Barnett and his management team, Excel Sports Management, have released an official statement to the media regarding Barnett’s recent positive test for steroids under the watch of the California State Athletic Commission.
It marks the first time that Barnett has addressed the media since the test results forced the abrupt cancellation of Affliction’s “Trilogy” show and the subsequent folding of the promotion last week. The complete unedited statement is available after the jump.

Despite published reports stating that a deal was nearly complete, perennial heavyweight king Fedor Emelianenko remains a free agent and not part of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s ever-growing heavyweight roster.
Emelianenko and his manager, M-1 Global figurehead Vadim Finkelchtein, held a press conference today in Anaheim, California to discuss the recent rumors and a variety of topics. It was also announced that Emelianenko will serve as the featured athlete in EA Sports’ first-ever MMA-related video game, “EA Sports MMA”, which is scheduled to be released next year.

Former Affliction heavyweights Ben Rothwell and Chase Gormley have reportedly signed with the UFC and will make their promotional debut against each other at UFC 104, which is scheduled to take place on October 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
The news comes from a report by Sherdog.com and also compliments a story posted by Inside Fights earlier today stating that Zuffa is expected to absorb the contracts of up to 20 unknown former Affliction athletes into the UFC and WEC as well.
Seal Beach, CA - The highly anticipated fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Josh Barnett at the Affliction Trilogy MMA show has been cancelled. The mega fight was scheduled to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim on August 1st. The unforeseen license denial of Josh Barnett gave Affliction limited time to find a replacement and adequately promote the new main event.
