Here are your news and notes for the evening of February 25, 2009.

  • Adrenaline MMA figurehead Monte Cox has confirmed that his client, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, will face former Olympic boxing gold medalist Ray Mercer in a boxing match that will headline Adrenaline MMA’s third showing on May 30 at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The fight will be Sylvia’s first-ever professional boxing match.

  • Former BodogFight welterweight champion Nick Thomson revealed Wednesday that his contract with EliteXC has been picked up by Strikeforce, which purchased limited assets from ProElite earlier this month. “They just called me today and they’re going to pick me up. So I am now with Sengoku and Strikeforce,” Thompson told MMA Weekly. “The Goat” recently won a decision over British welterweight Paul Daley at the Maximum Fighting Championship’s latest event on February 20.

  • UFC veteran Alberto Crane will try to keep a three-fight winning streak alive when he faces current No Limit MMA welterweight champion Eric Regan in the main event of Rage in the Cage 123 on February 28 in Arizona. Since his release from the UFC, Crane has won three out of his last four fights. All of his wins have come by submission in the first round. Regan is most notable for dropping a decision against UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard last March.

  • Miletich Stops Denny in Return Bout at Adrenaline MMA II

Former UFC welterweight champion and Miletich Fighting Systems founder Pat Miletich was victorious in his first bout in over two years last night in Moline, Illinois as the MMA pioneer scored a first-round TKO of journeyman Thomas Denny in the main event of Monte Cox’s second Adrenaline MMA show.

During an early exchange, Miletich tagged Denny with a looping left hook that stunned him and then scored an easy takedown. Miletich spent the majority of the first round controlling Denny on the mat. Denny was able to get back to his feet on one occasion, but Miletich was quick to push him back down to the canvas.

The fight stayed standing in the second round, where Miletich blasted Denny with two consecutive right hands that sent the King of the Cage veteran crumbling to the ground. Miletich (29-7-2) pounced on Denny (26-18) and delivered a few more unanswered punches before referee Michael Reid stepped in to save Denny.

Former UFC welterweight champion and longtime mixed martial arts trainer Pat Miletich will return to action after a two-year layoff to headline Monte Cox’s second Adrenaline MMA event tonight at the I-Wireless Center in Moline, Illinois against journeyman veteran Thomas Denny.

The event will be broadcast live on HDNet starting at 10 PM ET.

Miletich returned from a four-year retirement to take on Renzo Gracie at an International Fight League event in September 2006 but was submitted by Gracie in the first round. Miletich, who successfully defended his UFC welterweight belt four times, was forced to retire from active competition in 2002 due to lingering problems with his neck. Denny last competed at EliteXC’s “Unfinished Business” event on July 26, losing via second-round TKO to Nick Diaz.

More details are coming out regarding a potential deal struck between promotional newcomer Bellator Fighting Championships and ESPN Deportes to produce a reality show that could air starting in April of next year. In turn, so is a list of fighters that may be involved with the show as well.

According to MMA Junkie, former EliteXC employees Hector Lombard and Dave Herman have both reportedly been sent offers from Bellator regarding their possible inclusion on the show. However talks are only in the preliminary stages.

Japanese-based World Victory Road has also indicated that they would like to use Herman on their “Sengoku VII” show in January. Two fighters that have competed overseas in the past year - Eddie Alvarez and Jorge Masvidal - round out the list of approached fighters known at this time.

Miletich to Return Against Denny at Adrenaline MMA’s Second Show

Former UFC welterweight champion and longtime mixed martial arts trainer Pat Miletich will be returning to action after a two-year layoff to headline Monte Cox’s second Adrenaline MMA event on December 11 against journeyman veteran Thomas Denny.

Ron Kruck of HDNet’s Inside MMA revealed the exclusive news on the television program this past Friday night. The show is scheduled to take place at the I-Wireless Center in Moline, Illinois and is also expected to feature former IFL standouts Ben Rothwell and Ryan McGivern on the card.

Tim Sylvia Might Be a Sly Fox

I didn’t know this but apparently Andrei Arlovski broke up with his former Playboy bunny girlfriend, Patrycja Mikula. Not sure when it went down, but it did, and it appears that someone has picked up right where Andrei left off. It’s not who you think…

According to Steve Cofield, (who will be a great addition to Yahoo! Sports ever-growing MMA coverage) Mikula was seen hanging out with Tim Sylvia, whom Arlovski has fought three times in his career as we all know, at this weekend’s Adrenaline MMA event in Chicago. Why she was with Big Tim of all people, I will never know, but word on the street is that Arlovski wasn’t too happy the whole thing.

Cofield says through Miletich sources that Sylvia and Mikula are indeed dating. However Mikula has told our good friend Ariel Helwani that her and Sylvia “are good friends and are not dating as of right now” She also wouldn’t rule out the two dating in the future, the whole “never say never” sort of thing.

Apparently Sylvia invited Mikula to the event since she lives on minutes from the Sears Centre. Could it be something more though?

With both fighters under contract to Monte Cox’s new organization as well as Affliction, Sylvia had to know that Arlovski was going to be there in attendance. A fourth fight between the two could be set up rather easily. Sylvia has lost his last two bouts and could easily lose to Fedor next month as well. He’s beaten Arlovski twice and probably believes he could do it again to get back on track.

Is this a ploy to get Arlovski to ask Cox for another rematch? It’s possible. This might be a love-triangle worth paying attention to.
