San Diego CA. – Wargods promises to showcase the most exciting match up in the light heavyweight division outside of the UFC with Vernon “Tiger” White versus Lew Polley at the Viejas Casino in Alpine, California May 30th.

However, do not underestimate the lightweight tournament line up. Steve Magdaleno, who trains out of Vladimir Matyushenko’s VMAT camp, steps up and steps in for sparing partner Andy Wang.  Steve is hot off Pancrase Neo-Blood Tournament winning performance.

“He stepped up to face Kit (Cope) who has done nothing but work on his MMA Game including his Jiu Jitsu with the Diaz brothers. Kit is a proven stand up fighter and great wrestler.  He took some losses early, but he was thrown in there against Kenny Florian and Rob McCullough. Kit is a super class athlete who is yet to peak in his MMA career. Steve Magdaleno will be a factor in the future of the lightweight division and with a win that can mean the future is now. A win for Kit means he is now ready to take on the top lightweights in the world.” states Wargods Promoter Marcelo Rivas.

NSAC Suspends Vernon White Nine Months

The Nevada State Athletic Commission today suspended longtime MMA veteran Vernon “Tiger” White for nine months following a positive test for the banned diuretic Hydrochlorothiazide after White competed at a recent Xtreme Fighting Association kickboxing event in Las Vegas.

The commission also fined White $2,000 and changed his victory over Anthony Brown at the show to a no-contest. Although White originally stated that he was unaware the diuretic was banned in the state of Nevada, he admitted making a mistake during today’s hearing according to MMA Weekly.

Because of his incoming suspension, White was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira last week. Nogueira will now take on Edwin Dewees in a light heavyweight preliminary bout that will not be aired during the one-hour pre-event special on FOX Sports Net. (The network has chosen to air Vitor Belfort’s middleweight debut against Terry Martin instead)

White, an original member of Ken Shamrock’s Lion’s Den, has been struggling recently - he’s lost five out of his last seven bouts. White’s most recent fight was a disqualification victory over Jeremiah Constant at a Xtreme Cage Combat show in April.

Dewees Inks Multi-Fight Deal With Affliction

Longtime veteran Edwin Dewees has signed a multi-fight deal with Affliction Clothing and will make his promotional debut at the organization’s upcoming “Banned” show on July 19th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, replacing Vernon “Tiger” White against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Affliction vice president Tom Atencio and Dewees made the announcement on a conference call with the media yesterday afternoon.

“We definitely had our sites set on Dewees and I am very happy to announce that he has signed a multi-fight deal with us,” Atencio said in a press release today. “Dewees was our first choice as a replacement for (Vernon) White. He is a great addition to our All-World caliber card.”

Dewees recently snapped a career-worst four-fight losing streak, submitting Richard Blake at a NoLimits Fighting event back in April. The former “Ultimate Fighter” cast member has fought primarily in his home state of Arizona, where he currently trains at an extension of Ken Shamrock’s Lions Den.

His opponent, Nogueira, has split his last four bouts, most recently earning a second-round TKO of Todd Gouwenberg at Hardcore Championship Fighting’s “Destiny” event in February. He was last in the spotlight courtesy of Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou last year, becoming the first victim of two epic knockout upsets by the Team Quest product in 2007.

White was forced to be taken off the card after tested positive for a banned diuretic following a recent Xtreme Fighting Association kickboxing event in Las Vegas. The Nevada State Athletic Commission has yet to comment on White’s positive test. Although the White-Nogueira bout was originally slated to be aired as part of a one-hour pre-event special on FOX Sports Net, the network has chosen to air Vitor Belfort’s middleweight debut against Terry Martin instead.

The Weekend Ahead…

There aren’t any blockbuster events going down this weekend but there are some smaller shows that everyone should definitely follow…

Obviously the big one has to be WCO: The Return, which will take place at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, CA this Saturday night. The card is stacked with veterans of the sport, including a main event between Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Lion’s Den veteran Vernon White as you can see below:

Renato Sobral vs. Vernon White
Mark Kerr vs. Kauai Kupihea
Ricco Rodriguez vs. Mike Kyle
Joe Riggs vs. Gustavo Machado
David Loiseau vs. Leopoldo Serao
Wesley Correira vs. Jimmy Ambriz
Tiki Ghosn vs. JJ Ambrose
Virgil Zwicker vs. David Mejia
Fabio Costa vs. Carlos Fuentes
Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Armando Sanchez
Cain Velasquez vs. Tony Sylvester

As we reported yesterday, Rick Roufus was forced to pull out of his scheduled bout against Mark Kerr after he was not cleared by the California State Athletic Commission in time for the fight. Armando Garcia says that it has nothing to do with Roufus’ health but rather his paperwork was not done on time in order for him to be scheduled to undergo all of the necessary pre-fight tests.

WCO officials are trying to replace Roufus with Kauai Kupihea, who has racked up a 15-11 professional record that includes knockouts of Wade Shipp and Travis Wiuff. Kupihea has been tentatively approved but that not passed all of his requirements as of this morning. We will have an update on his status as soon as we receive the information.

Semmy Schilt will fight in MMA for the first time in over a year when he takes on Nandor Guelmino at the first-ever Lord of the Ring event this weekend at the Belgrade Arena in Belgrade, Serbia.

Schilt has not fought since submitting Min Soo Kim with a triangle choke at K-1 Hero’s 6 in August of 2006. Not much is known about Guelmino except that he only has three professional MMA bouts under his belt.

Sherdog has an article on Schilt’s return here.

Bonecrunch Fighting will also hold it’s first-ever event this weekend in Lakeland, Florida. The promotion uses a schedule similar to the IFL except matchups between teams will work like an elimination tournament if that makes any sense.

UFC lightweight Din Thomas will guide the Port St. Lucie Devils into action against the Tampa Terrors. The Cincinnati Norsemen and the Lakeland Blaze will clash in the other matchup. Seth Petruzelli and Josh Odom will be at the event to announce their fight between each other at the promotion’s next event in February.

KOTC and DEEP also have events scheduled for this weekend. MMA on Tap will have full results for those shows and the rest of the events that are taking place this weekend.

WCO “The Return” Features Star-Filled Card

The World Cagefighting Organization headed by Bruce Bellocchi has teamed with Valor Fighting, Xcess Fighting and Primal MMA to produce one of the greatest MMA cards seen in years! Heading the lineup is Renato “Babalu” Sobral as he makes his long awaited stateside return since his UFC departure. Babalu will take on veteran Lion’s Den fighter, Vernon “Tiger” White.

The star studded undercard features two former UFC Heavyweight Champions. Former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Mark “The Smashing Machine” Kerr’s return to the cage as he continues his comeback against K1 legend, Rick Roufus who is making his MMA debut. Then the bad blood boils over as former UFC Heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguiz finally meets Mike Kyle.

Also in action is Joe “Diesel” Riggs as he takes on Gracie Barra fighter Gustavo “Ximu” Machado. Wesley “Cabbage” Correia returns taking on veteran Jimmy “The Titan” Ambriz. Tiki Ghosn battles it out against Team Quest’s Dave Gardner. UFC Veteran’s, David “The Crow” Loiseau and Drew Fickett will also see action as will Antonio McKee.

“My goal is to compete with the big boys. I think you can see by the card we have put together that we are making a statement. The fans want great fights. We’re giving it to them” - Bruce Bellocchi, of The WCO.

News and Notes

- Caol Uno will make his return to the octagon March 3rd at UFC 68 in Ohio. Uno’s opponent will be lightweight contender and ‘The Ultimate Fighter II’ winner Joe Stevenson.

- MMAWeekly has Dan Lauzon, Matt Wiman and Nathan Diaz listed as fighters on the upcoming season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter 5’.

- The IFL has announced that the fight between Vernon White and Raphael Davis has been cancelled because it was not approved by the California State Athletic Commission.

The reasoning behind the decision was that the difference in experience between the two fighters gave one an unfair advantage over another and therfore the bout could be sanctioned. The CSAC is right - White has fought in more than 50 bouts while this would have just been Davis’ third career fight.

This now means that there will be no light-heavyweight fight in tomorrow’s matchup between the Nevada Lions and the San Jose Razorclaws. A second lightweight fight between Joe Martin and Clint Coronel will take place of this one.

- The California State Athletic Commission announced yesterday that MMA promotions seeking to put on a sanctioned event in the state now have the option of using a cage or a ring. The IFL’s event on Friday night will be the first time that a ring will be used in for MMA competition in California’s history…

- Jeff Monson will make his return to the UK at Cage Warriors: Showdown 3, defending his heavyweight belt against an opponent that has yet to be named. However many are speculating that Monson will be taking on Mario Neto in his third title defense.

Monson’s fight with Fedor on the March 3rd Bodog card has been cancelled. The bout has not yet been rescheduled although it is expected they will just move the fight to Bodog’s April event without a problem…

Southworth-White to Fight for First Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight Title

Bobby Southworth and Vernon White will battle for the vacant Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight Championship on December 8th.

For Vernon White, this opportunity is just another chance to enjoy success in a major MMA promotion…

“It’s gonna be an honor for me to take this title and come home with it,” said the 35-year-old White, a 13-year veteran of the professional fight game who has seen action in every major mixed martial arts organization from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to Japan’s K-1 and Pride Fighting Championship. “It means a lot to me. I’ve held titles in three other organizations and I want another one.”

There seems to be some bad blood coming into this contest. Apparently Fram Shamrock has said some disrespectful things about his own brother, Ken Shamrock, creator of The Lion’s Den in which White helped Shamrock develop into one of the top fight teams of the 1990’s.

Southworth trains with the American Kickboxing Academy, a team that Frank Shamrock also used to train with.

“Frank has said some disparaging remarks about Ken and it’s not right,” explained Tiger. “I know that (Bobby) used to train with Frank, so that, in itself, makes me want to go out there and bury him because I know he thinks he’s got submission skills.”

Southworth has been regarded by many to owning the talent necessary to hold a championship but always falling short. He gets the chance to prove the critics wrong at Strikeforce: Triple Threat…
