The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced yesterday a pair of fights that will headlined the organization’s upcoming return to Canada on April 18. Anderson Silva will defend his UFC middleweight title against fellow Brazil native Thales Leites and former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell will take on former PRIDE star Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Silva comes into the fight never having lost in the UFC. Since taking the middleweight title from Rich Franklin over two years ago, “The Spider” has won six consecutive fights, including a successful rematch against Franklin, title defenses over Nate Marquardt and Dan Henderson, and a quick win at light heavyweight against James Irvin.

Although Thales Leites himself has said that he has signed a contract to challenge Anderson Silva for his UFC middleweight title when the organization returns to Montreal, Quebec, Canada for UFC 97 on April 18, UFC President Dana White has been hesitant to confirm the rumored bout.

When asked if the Silva-Leites matchup would serve as the main event for UFC 97 at the post-fight press conference for UFC 92 early Sunday morning, White only stated that the fight would “probably” headline the show.

Leites told Tatame.com on December 23 that he had signed to fight Silva and was very much looking forward to the bout, citing that a fight against Silva would require a strategic training camp and game plan going into the bout.

Streaking grappling ace Thales Leites, winner of his last five fights, is said to currently be on a short list of potential contenders that could receive a shot at Anderson Silva’s UFC middleweight title at some point next year.

UFC President Dana White reportedly made the revelation at a question-and-answer session between himself and select fans that took place prior to the weigh-ins for the UFC’s “Fights for the Troops” event in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

According to White and UFC Vice President of Talent Relations Joe Silva’s remarks, Leites remains at the top of a list that includes multiple fighters that are under consideration to possibly face Silva when he makes his next middleweight title defense. Silva is currently rumored to be next competing at a yet-to-be-announced UFC event in London, England in February.

Leites, who most recently scored a first-round submission of Drew McFedries at UFC 90, has won his last five UFC fights since dropping an unanimous decision to Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut two years ago. Leites picked up the biggest win of his career in June when he earned a razor-close split decision over former middleweight title challenger Nate Marquardt.

Almeida-Horwich Added to UFC 90 in Chicago

Along with a previously rumored bout between Thales Leites and Goran Reljic, the Ultimate Fighting Championship today announced the addition of a middleweight bout between Ricardo Almeida and former IFL middleweight champion Matt Horwich to the preliminary card of UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote.

Almeida returned to professional competition after a five-year hiatus and immediately reverted back to his winning ways, submitting last-minute replacement opponent Rob Yundt at UFC 81 in February. The victory earned Almeida a shot at rising contender Patrick Cote at UFC 86 last month, with a shot at current champion Anderson Silva on the line. However Almeida’s lack of cardio came into play and he ended up losing a split decision to the Canadian.

Horwich meanwhile, became the IFL’s first-ever middleweight champion after besting Brian Foster and Benji Radach in last year’s four-man tournament to win the vacant belt. Horwich was then defeated in his first title defense, dropping a unanimous decision to Ryan McGivern in February. Horwich most recently fought at the IFL’s last-ever event three months ago, winning a decision over Joey Guel.

Injury Forces Lister Out of UFN 15

Dean Lister. Photo property of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Grappling wizard and current UFC middleweight contender Dean Lister has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Thales Leites at UFC Fight Night 15 on September 17th after suffering a knee injury during a recent training session.

Lister’s management team confirmed the injury with MMA Weekly earlier this afternoon. Lister is only expected to be out of action for a couple of weeks and his bout against Leites is said to be currently in talks to be moved to a yet-to-be-announced UFC event in Portland, Oregon in November. According to Lister’s management team, matchmaker Joe Silva was very understanding of Lister’s injury and will attempt to get him a future fight as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Leites tells Tatame.com that Lister’s withdrawal is now the second straight opponent that pulled out of a fight against him at the same event. Leites stated that newcomer Goran Reljic, who surprisingly stopped Wilson Gouveia at UFC 84 in May, also became injured in recent weeks as well.

“Now I don’t know who will I fight with”, Leites said in the article. “I was thinking and all the other guys from my division are with opponents. They said I’ll fight, but I don’t know against who.”

Dean Lister will take on his second straight skilled grappler as he will reportedly face Thales Leites in a scheduled bout at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s inaugural venture to Omaha, Nebraska for UFC Fight Night 15 on September 17th.

The news comes from a report by MMA Mania via IntheGuard.tv, which confirmed the bout with sources close to Leites’ camp last night. The UFC has yet to officially announce the bout in any capacity. It’s expected to join a fight between Jeremy Horn and Wilson Gouveia as one of the non-televised preliminary bouts.

Lister is currently riding a two-fight winning streak. Since dropping a lackluster decision to Nate Marquardt last year, Lister has won a unanimous decision over Jordan Radev this past December and submitted grappling wizard Jeremy Horn at “The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale” last month.

Leites is on a winning streak of his own. After dropping his UFC debut to Martin Kampmann, Leites has racked up four straight victories, his most recent a controversial split decision win over former middleweight title challenger Nate Marquardt.
