Quote of the Day: Kaufman Thinks Rousey is “Scared”, Title Shot is “Ridiculous”

Sarah Kaufman. Photo by Daisy Rosas/Strikeforce.

"I put in my time and, being the former champ and having had two fights since the only loss of my career, I've definitely earned the right to fight Miesha Tate and fight for the 135-pound title with Strikeforce. Then there's Ronda, who's only been fighting for a year. Granted, she has her judo experience, but she hasn't fought anyone of a high caliber. She's fought at 145 pounds, hasn't even competed at 135 pounds at all, and for her to be given the opportunity to fight for the title, it's pretty ridiculous. She's scared to fight Cyborg, for sure, and understandably. Cyborg is a formidable fighter. But if you're saying you want a title, it shouldn't matter whether it's at 145 or 135. Now she's backpedaling and saying, 'Oh, I want Cyborg to come to 135.' Or maybe she'll do it as a catchweight. Or maybe in four or five fights. She's pretty much just pushing the fight off, clearly running from it."

Former Strikeforce bantamweight women's champion Sarah Kaufman expresses her feelings to MMA Fighting concerning Ronda Rousey's recently granted title shot against reigning title holder Miesha Tate for a yet-to-be-announced event in March.

Coker Optimistic About Strikeforce’s Future, Dedicated to Promoting Women’s MMA

Scott Coker. Photo by Esther Lin/AllElbows.com.

Despite continual speculation that Strikeforce will make like other Zuffa-owned organizations and fold into the UFC in the very near future, longtime promotional figurehead Scott Coker still has hope for his creation.

Reports were published earlier this week that the organization was set to renew its contract with Showtime, albeit under some different terms. According to Coker, negotiations are ongoing, but nothing has been signed yet.

"There’s nothing to announce but I’m optimistic at this point," Coker said on a Tuesday conference call to promote Strikeforce's next event on December 17. "We’ll have to wait and see. I think that things are going well and I think that we’ll have something shortly.

Melendez Eyes Shift to UFC, Stays Focused on Masvidal

Gilbert Melendez. Photo by Esther Lin/AllElbows.com.

As Gilbert Melendez enters what could be his last fight under the Strikeforce banner, he admits that he can't help but pay attention to the rumors that are circulating and suggesting what will likely be a move to the UFC at some point next year.

Still, the reigning Strikeforce lightweight champion remains grounded, acutely aware of the challenge that well-traveled veteran Jorge Masvidal presents during their scheduled title clash on December 17 at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California.

“I’m very excited for this fight,” Melendez told reporters during a Tuesday media conference call.  “I think Jorge is a very tough guy. He’s not very popular, so he’s pretty underrated. It’s a good challenge. He’s someone that’s been in this circuit for a long time outside of the UFC so I’ve wanted to fight him for a couple of years now. He looked really good against K.J. [Noons] Looked in good shape. Looks like he’s really adapted to the weight class. He’s a complete MMA fighter.”
