— Despite announcing his intention to focus on his acting career full-time, UFC lightweight contender Roger Huerta is now considering a full-time return to the organization following a split decision loss to Gray Maynard at last week’s UFC Fight Night 19 that fulfilled his latest UFC contract. “I can’t go out with two losses in a row,” Huerts said. “I don’t think I’m going to call it quits anytime soon. I’m still open to acting. Hopefully we get something going with that, but I’m not going to prioritize acting now. I’ll still prioritize fighting. If the UFC wants me back, I’d be willing to go back.” [Sherdog.com]

— Seasoned veteran Javier Vasquez has been tapped to replace an injured Mark Hominick against Deividas Taurosevicius in a featherweight bout at WEC 43 on October 10 in San Antonio, Texas. Hominick will reportedly be sidelined for about a month due to a reoccurring back injury. Vasquez fell in his WEC debut last month, dropping a split decision to L.C. Davis at WEC 42. [MMA Junkie]

Former Sports Illustrated cover boy Roger Huerta could be receiving quite the tough test in his final fight with the UFC for the near future in the form of former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk.

According to MMA Weekly’s “MMA Insider Blog”, a bout between Huerta and Sherk could be part of the UFC’s next venture up into Canada for UFC 97, which is slated to take place on April 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.

Huerta recently revealed his intention to let the remainder of his current contract with the UFC run out instead of re-signing with the promotion in order to pursue acting and modeling opportunities. The 25-year-old has since stated that he would likely return to professional competition in the future.

Report: Huerta Inks New Contract With UFC

Months after bashing the UFC for their skewed pay scale and treatment of fighters, popular lightweight Roger Huerta has reportedly inked a new deal with the organization that will have him featured in five more fights according to MMA Weekly.

Huerta’s comments concerning the organization came in the July issue of FIGHT! Magazine, where he criticized the UFC for failing to pay their fighters enough to cover training expenses and for a measly $50 fee he received after putting in time on a past UFC press tour among other things.

“The truth is, I don’t really care if I fight in the UFC or somewhere else,” Huerta said at the time. “I want to work for a company that is as loyal to me as I am to them.”

Discussing the Aftermath of UFC 87

Brock Lesnar. Photo property of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

It’s only been two days since the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s debut show in Minnesota and the after-effects of the event are already being hotly-discussed around the MMA world. While the show may not have delivered in terms of brutal and quick stoppages, each fight that took place was filled with technical exchanges and exciting moments. There wasn’t much more the hardcore fan could ask for.

However the results of the bouts, primarily those that took place on the televised main card, have left questions in terms of the futures of some fighters. Will Georges St. Pierre actually rematch B.J. Penn later this year? What’s next for Brock Lesnar, Kenny Florian, and Roger Huerta? Here’s my thoughts on the answers to those…

Will St. Pierre and Penn fight before the end of the year?

Yes. Without a doubt. It’s a fight that even UFC President Dana White has been going crazy about even before St. Pierre fought and defeated Jon Fitch this past weekend. We all know Penn is stubborn when it comes to his goals and it seems like his dream to become a multi-division champion won’t be leaving him anytime soon. St. Pierre is currently at the top of his game in every aspect, especially mentally, meaning that he won’t be turning down any kind of fight at the moment.

St. Pierre Defeats Fitch; Penn Rematch Looms

Casting the ghosts of disappointing defeats aside, Georges St. Pierre flourished in his first successful UFC welterweight title defense, dominating top contender Jon Fitch over five rounds en route to a unanimous decision win in front of a sold-out crowd Saturday night at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

St. Pierre (17-2) set the tempo early, quickly taking down Fitch (17-3), a former standout wrestler at Purdue University. After a few more meetings with the mat, Fitch was sent there once again courtesy of a straight right from St. Pierre. The Canadian pounced on his opponent and did his best to finish the fight but Fitch, proving true to his reputation, regained his composure and fought on.

“He showed why I said that,” St. Pierre said after the fight when referring to Fitch’s toughness. “It was his first title shot and he did awesome. He’ll be back. I told him that this might be the best thing to ever happen to him.”
