“Biography” to Feature Randy Couture Tonight

Randy Couture. Photo property of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

The Biography Channel will debut a special on UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture tonight at 10 PM ET. It’s basically the old biography shows you used to see on A&E, except now they’ve been relegated to their own channel on digital cable. The channel can be found on DirecTV and DISH Network but it varies in terms of cable providers.

A description from the channel’s official website:

He’s the five-time champ of America’s fastest growing sport. His fights sell out arenas and millions of fans in 36 countries worldwide tune in to telecasts weekly and pay top dollar for exclusive pay-per-view events. He’s Randy Couture: the Ultimate Fighting Champion. The simple title belies the near inhuman strength it has taken to kick, choke and claw his way to the top of professional fighting. From early days on his high school wrestling team to the Army and Olympics, this Washington native has built a career on years of training—perfecting his signature style referred to as the “ground and pound.” Losses on and off the mat take their toll, but also drive Couture to cement his title as “the best fighter of all time.”

These type of shows are usually pretty good and I can only assume that they did a decent job with Couture’s story. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to check it out or not but anyone that does is welcome to leave a mini-report in the comments.

UFC vs. Couture Battle Moves Back to Vegas

The seemingly never-ending battle between the Ultimate Fighting Championship and it’s estranged heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, will now officially move back to Las Vegas after a Dallas, Texas appeals court blocked a separate Texas court from hearing Mark Cuban’s request for a declaratory judgment concerning the contractual status of Couture when it comes to the UFC on Friday.

Cuban is expected to appeal the ruling to the Texas Supreme Court next week. His HDNet Fights promotion reportedly entered into a contractual agreement with Couture back in February, thus the request for a decision on Couture’s contractual status. UFC parent company Zuffa originally filed to remove HDNet’s request back in March. The move was made because the suit was not filed in Nevada, where the company is based.

However “HDNet MMA 2008”, the name Cuban filed suit under, is a Nevada limited liability company. Zuffa also alleged that HDNet’s Nevada address was an attempt to manipulate the court’s jurisdiction, but the accusation fell on deaf ears. Now that Zuffa has the court battle back on their home turf, they have began to have closed-door arbitration hearings in an attempt to finally solve the battle that has now been ongoing for almost eight months now.

Measuring the Success of Affliction

As a company, Affliction is already a successful clothing line.  From sales to brand power, it’s getting the job done.

Extending that brand to become a premier MMA organization is a whole other matter.

For Affliction to make the splash they wanted to they dished out big salaries to the widey-regarded top heavyweight in the world, along with other big name and former UFC champions.  A risky proposition for a newly formed organization.  Creating a bigger speedbump was the big kid on the block, the UFC, quickly putting together an event to air, for free on cable, on the same night.

Glancing at the numbers, and given the fan and media reception, it’s likely we’ll see a second event from Affliction.

Becoming the Natural

Randy Couture stops by Fox News to talk with Mike Straka, talk about his background, MMA, and promote his new book, an autobiography titled Becoming the Natural.  The book is available for order at Amazon (hence our pimpy affiliate links).

Amount MMA news topics Couture talks about: Fedor’s win over Sylvia, and his relationship with the UFC, although it’s nothing too new.  He still feels he’s been treated differently, but does choose his words carefully, in a just-in-case-type of feel.

Couture Expecting Contractual Ruling This Week

Embattled UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture reportedly expects a Texas state court to rule this week on his contractual standing with the organization, potentially setting up an anticipated showdown between himself and heavyweight king Fedor Emelianenko according to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com.

Even though a ruling may be made, Couture believes that his status won’t be completely finalized due to possible appeals from the losing party. However Couture remains confident that he will indeed face Emelianenko sometime before his impending retirement in the near future.

“When, where and with what promotion — we don’t know,” Couture said in the report. “It could happen in the UFC. We just don’t know. I want it to happen. Fedor wants it to happen. In some way, shape or form, we’re going to make it happen.”

MMA Fight Weekly - July 17, 2008

Here’s Thursday night’s segment of MMA Fight Weekly from NBCSports.com. The five-minute episode revolves around the two big-time events going on this weekend, Affliction: Banned, and UFC Fight Night 14. The main cards of the two shows are broken down fight-by-fight. Hosts Tiffany Simons and Mike Chiappetta also touch on the future of current UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture and why his current status with the promotion won’t really come into play if Affliction Entertainment fails to make it big after holding their first couple events.

White Attempting to Fix Things With Couture?

Dana White. Photo property of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

While it’s pretty easy to assume that the current relationship between UFC President Dana White and his reigning heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, might be a little rocky considering White’s company filed a defamation suit against Couture earlier this year, things might be starting to get a little better between the two.

White was a guest this morning on CBS and XM Satellite Radio’s “Opie and Anthony Show” (audio here) where he talked about a variety of topics, including his current situation with Couture. As he’s done all throughout the past eight months since Couture formally resigned from the promotion, White had nothing but good things to say about the UFC Hall-of-Famer.

“I have nothing but respect for Randy Couture,” White said on the program. “This guy is a real fighter and he’s always fought the best fighters in the world. So whatever his reasoning his for wanting to sit out for the remainder of this thing, I want Randy Couture back in the UFC. I want him to be a part of this thing for the rest of his life and I’m trying to work that out with Randy right now so we’ll see what happens.”

Whether or not White and Couture are really trying to work something out remains to be seen, but this is the first time in quite a while that White has even mentioned anything related to an attempt to patch things up with Couture.

White also discussed his attempts to sign former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko, widely considered the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. While one of Couture’s main reasons for leaving the UFC was White’s inability to sign Emelianenko, he noted that his attempts were not made in vain.
