A lot of news to report so I’ve decided to throw up a Sunday edition of CKA…

News and Notes

- Pancrase has been forced to cancel it’s championship main event for this morning’s 2007 Rising Tour show after former heavyweight King of Pancrase Kestutis “Tiger” Arbocius pulled a no-show. His scheduled opponent, current Heavyweight King of Pancrase Assuerio Silva, has been removed from the card and will defend his title at a later date.

Officials from Sherdog have stated that varying reports reveal that no one really knows where Arbocius is right now:

Initial reports from Japanese media, which attributed information to Arbocius’ management, suggested that the 32-year-old Lithuanian* may have had difficulty with local police.

A Pancrase official disputed that report, telling Sherdog.com via e-mail, “Nobody knows where he is, even his manager. Pancrase is trying to keep in touch with him.”

Yuki Kondo’s bout against Yuji Sakuragi will now serve as the main event for the show.

- Shooto has announced five more bouts for it’s Back to our Roots 6 card, set for November 8th at Yoyogi National Stadium Second Gymnasium in Tokyo:

Shinichi Kojima vs Eduardo Dantas
Megumi Fujii vs Kyoko Takabayashi
Rambaa Somdet vs Masaaki Sugawara
Masashi Yozen vs Leandro Silva
Hayate Usui vs Shintaro Ishiwatari

- In a recent interview with ADCC News, Jake Shields stated that he is closer to signing with the UFC than EliteXC right now:

“I want to go out there and fight the best. I’m really looking at UFC over Elite because that is where a lot of top guys are. In the next few weeks I’ll probably make my decision on where I’m going to be signing. I’m sure we’re going to talk to them in the next week before we sign anything with Elite. I’m ready to get in there with the top guys. With the Rumble on the Rock tournament and EliteXC and my last four or five fights have been top come and have been fast, easy fights. I think it definitely shows I belong there.”

- The Edmonton Sun is reporting that Hardcore Championship Fighting is currently in contract talks with Vitor Belfort, Ricardo Arona, and John Alessio:

The Canadian fight club has been on a big-name signing binge of late.

Pride’s Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, former UFC veterans Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral and Joe Riggs have signed on. Negotiations are ongoing with former UFC heavyweight champ Vitor Belfort, Pride vet Ricardo Arona and Canadian John Alessio.

“We are the only Canadian promotion that is bringing in huge international names,” says Crawford. “We remain committed to promoting local talent, but I believe Canadians are educated in the sport and want to see the world’s best.”

- American Top Team has announced that Seth Petruzelli has joined the ranks of the Florida-based training team:

Seth has been involved in the MMA scene for awhile and decided to join ATT to help further his career while preparing and train for his fights. When not preparing for his fights at the Main academy in Coconut Creek, FL. Seth will continue teaching at ATT Orlando along with Paul Rodriguez.

Look for Seth to be back in action Oct. 27th at Knight Fights in Orlando, Florida.

- Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer is reporting that Strikeforce will hold a four-man middleweight tournament at their next event on November 16th:

Strikeforce announced the first one-night tournament ever in California, which will be a four-man middleweight tournament featuring Joe Riggs and Falaniko Vitale on 11/16 in San Jose at the HP Pavilion. Promoter Scott Coker said it was be streamed live on Yahoo! like the Playboy Mansion show was. Cung Le will be in the non-tourament main event.

News and Notes

- I would try and elaborate more on the closing of the PRIDE offices in Japan but instead I’ll leave it to the two that can do it best:

Zach Arnold: Japanese media coverage of PRIDE’s death
Jordan Breen: Koubousen Companion: Euthan-Asia

- The California State Athletic Commission has announced the all fighters that participated in last weekend’s Strikeforce event, with the exception of Adam Smith, have all tested negative for performance enhancing drugs and drugs of abuse.

- Both K-1 Hero’s and Pancrase have announced details about their upcoming events…

Denis Kang, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Dong Sik Yoon, and Taiei Kin are all said to be part of K-1 Hero’s October 28th event at the Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea.

Pancrase has officially announced three bouts for it’s October 14th show - Middleweight King of Pancrase Yuichi Nakanishi will defend his title against Izuru Takeuchi, heavyweights Tatsuya Mizunoa and Masayuki Kono will collide, and Wataru Takahash takes on Shinsuke Shoji.

Daiki Hata will also be on the card against an opponent that has not yet been announced.

- Matt Hamill made a post on his official website yesterday concerning the booking of the Rashad Evans-Michael Bisping matchup at UFC 78:

Wow! Let me just say… I am in shock. First, I get hosed by two judges in London and now the much anticipated rematch has evaporated in front of my eyes. I’m starting to feel like the deck is stacked against me. Duff, my trainer/manager told me he thought something like this would happen when he read Bisping’s statement on the internet. He said it looked like Bisping was looking for a way out of the rematch. I posted a statement about my knee surgery on 9/25 so everyone would know it was minor, and I would be ready by mid December. I didn’t think six weeks was that long of a wait, apparently, Bisping and the UFC did. I am so hungry to fight. I had surgery to add wrestling back to my arsenal. I fought Bisping’s fight at UFC 75 and I was looking forward to fighting my fight in the rematch. I feel honored that so many people have told me I won the fight in London. It makes the decision easier for me to accept. I want to fight… I want to fight ASAP! Hopefully the UFC will schedule a fight for me soon. I would like to fight in December or January and hopefully Bisping after that… If Bisping has the guts to do it again.

- Adam Swift of UFC Daily is reporting via Dave Meltzer that Sean Sherk has passed a lie detector test concerning his usage of steroids:

Sean Sherk passed a lie detector test saying that he did not knowingly use steroids. While certainly not conclusive, it can’t hurt his chances at getting his suspension over turned or at the very least reduced.

News and Notes

- The CSAC has announced that the following fighters have tested negative for performance enhancing drugs following post-fight testing for UFC 76: Thiago Tavares, Tyson Griffin, Ryoto Machida, Anthony Johnson, and Rich Clementi. The only test results from the event that haven’t been released yet are of Chuck Liddell, Mauricio Rua, Forrest Griffin, and Keith Jardine. The results for those fighters are expected to be released later in the week.

- Josh Thomson spoke with The Fight Network concerning a possible lawsuit Thomson may file against former UFC Middleweight Champion Frank Shamrock. Shamrock reportedly called Thomson “MMA’s first openly gay fighter” during this past weekend’s Strikeforce broadcast.

“I kind of snickered about it,” Thomson said, “but I also have had some big money sponsors coming up to me and asking me whether it was true or not. That potentially could cost me money, and that, to me, is basically what I’m getting at.”

I know that Thomson has some crazy hair and his appearance on “Blind Date” didn’t really go that well but I don’t believe Thomson is gay.

Thomson and Shamrock have had a feud going for well over a year now. Thomson attributes the tension due to the fact that Shamrock was angry that fighters from the American Kickboxing Academy decided against joining a new gym that Shamrock was opening. Shamrock has claimed in the past that Thomson has been bad mouthing him for years.

- Tonight’s episode of UFC Unleashed will feature Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs Jason Lambert from UFC 68 and Houston Alexander vs Keith Jardine from UFC 71. I’m not sure what the third fight on the broadcast will be. Don’t forget that The Ultimate Fighter is on right after that.

- Punch Drunk Gamer posted a recent interview with Josh Barnett where Barnett states that he would like to fight in Pancrase:

“I would like to be fighting in Pancrase.  I would love to continue fighting there and hopefully I will get a chance to defend my belt this year.  I have had some trouble with getting promoters to honor what they agreed to and cooperate with Pancrase to get a match set-up.  So now that I am a free agent I would like to do it.”

Barnett has always noted in the past that he would like the chance to defend his belt in Pancrase as a stipulation in any contract he signs with an organization. However since talks haven’t gone anywhere with anyone, it seems that Barnett may do that before signing anywhere.

Touch of gloves to Five Ounces of Pain for the find.

-  Ricco Rodriguez is going to headline Battle Cage Xtreme III in New Jersey on October 20th. He will take on Kauai Kupihiea for the USKBA Heavyweight Title.

- Speaking of Ricco, he’s apparently going to be a cast member of VH1’s newest reality show, Celebrity Rehab. The series debuts on January 10th.

- Fight Opinion wants you to help decide what they should discuss on their next radio show.

- In a recent interview with Sherdog’s John Lee, SpiritMC CEO Kwang Hyun Park stated that current SpiritMC Middleweight Champion Steve Bruno has signed with the UFC:

As for SpiritMC middleweight champion Steve Bruno, Park says, “As far as I know, Steve has signed with the UFC, but we have made it clear that he needs to defend his title.”

News and Notes

- MMA Junkie is reporting a lot of news lately…

The UFC has apparently signed former PRIDE, Shooto, and Pancrase veteran Akihiro Gono and has sent UFC welterweight Tamdan McCrory a contract proposing the fight according to McCrory’s manager:

“He’ll (be at) UFC 78 if he accepts the fight, which I assume he will considering he has fought top guys his whole career,” Ciotoli.

”(The UFC’s been) trying to get me on that card, being that I’m from the area and have a strong fan base in New Jersey,” McCrory told us last month.

Marvin Eastman has been forced to pull out of his scheduled bout against Demian Maia at UFC 77 after undergoing eye surgery:

“I had a weak spot on my retina for a long time, and about two weeks ago, it tore a little bit,” Eastman said. “It felt like sleepy eye. I went in to check it out last Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., and I was in surgery by 7. It’s fixed now, and I’ve got to chill a month and can’t fight until November.“

No word as of yet on a replacement opponent for Eastman.

Chris Lytle may be heading over to the WEC for a possible title shot against WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit:

MMA fan favorite and “The Ultimate Fighter 4” welterweight runner-up Chris Lytle may be leaving the UFC for Zuffa LLC’s other fight promotion — the WEC — and may be in line for an immediate title shot.

In fact, a source close to current WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit (21-4) first contacted MMAjunkie.com about the possibility, saying UFC and WEC officials were discussing the potential title fight. However, the WEC recently folded a proposed November event into its Dec. 12 fight card, and as of now, the organization has far more fighters than it has fight slots.

A reliable source tell us that a Condit-Lytle fight would happen no sooner than February 2008 — if then — because of the backlog.

- Brazilian MMA website Tatame is reporting that former PRIDE star Ricardo Arona may currently be in contract talks with the UFC.

Hat tip to UFC Mania for the Arona link.

- So Matt Hamill has a torn ACL? He also fought Michael Bisping with that torn ACL? Read what Adam Morgan and 411Mania have to say about that.

- It seems that the UFC has took down UFC Takedown:

Late last week, Matt Cava of UFCtakedown.com was issued a Cease and Desist by Zuffa, LLC. He has been told to remove his website. They specifically nailed him for using UFC in his URL as well as broadcasting illegal fight videos. September 8th’s UFC 75: Champion v. Champion videos as well as a fight between Ricardo Arona and Quinton Jackson were specifically mentioned. As of today, UFCtakedown.com no longer exists. In the meantime, Matt has been able to secure MMAtakedown.net for the time being.

- Brigham Young University has banned Versus from the school’s channel selection, citing costs and the broadcasting of MMA as the reasons:

BYU has banned access to Versus on its campus cable, citing cost and content issues such as ultimate fighting.

Touch of gloves to Fight Opinion for that one.

Viera Forced to Pull Out of Kitaoka Bout

Sherdog is reporting that PRIDE veteran Milton Vieira has been forced to pull out of his scheduled main event bout with Satoru Kitaoka at Pancrase’s Rising Tour event on September 5th. Vieira apparently removed himself from the card after learning that his visa application that would allow him to travel to Japan had been denied.

Sources close to Vieira have stated that Pancrase most likely would like an international fighter from a country other than Japan to take on Kitaoka. Some of the leading canidates are said to be PRIDE veteran David Baron, Matias Awad, Mario Stapel, and Daniel Weichel.

News and Notes

- Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Tito Ortiz turned down an offer to fight Forrest Griffin in a rematch of their controversial split decision bout in 2006 at UFC 72.

UFC president Dana White said he had tried to match Griffin with former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, but said Ortiz declined.

“Tito didn’t want to come over here, the big sissy,” White said.

Griffin, who lost a controversial split decision to Ortiz last year, said he would welcome a rematch with Ortiz.

“Most definitely, it’s a fight I wouldn’t say no to,” Griffin said.

News and Notes

- A Croatian news outlet reported yesterday in an interview with Mirko Cro Cop that his next fight would take place at UFC 75, the organization’s next event to be held in England. However in the latest issue of Japanese magazine Kamipro, Cro Cop’s manager Ken Imai stated that his client will most likely fight on the undercard of Randy Couture and Gabriel Gonzaga’s heavyweight title bout at UFC 74 in August.

- The Fight Network is reporting that Nippon Gaishi Hall, the proposed site for the PRIDE Lightweight Grand Prix scheduled to begin on July 16th, has now removed the event from it’s calendar.

- Kestutis Arbocius has been stripped of the Heavyweight King of Pancrase title because of inactivity. The title has been declared vacant and will be on the line at Pancrase’s 2007 Rising Tour on May 30th when Tatsuya Mizuno and Assuerio Silva battle for it.

- Art of War 3 has been moved from June 30th to August 18th according to the Houston Chronicle:

Art of War 3 is being postponed until later this summer.

The promoter was having trouble clearing enough homes to make a pay-per-view telecast fly and decided to move the show, originally scheduled for June 30 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, to August.

The new date is Aug. 18. Pedro Rizzo versus Jeff Monson remains the show headliner, with Jeremy Horn, Carlo Prater and Jake Shields also on the card.

The date of the event has also been changed on the official site...
