Here’s a little recap of what went on this past weekend, starting with Carlos Condit reportedly signing a contract extension with World Extreme Cagefighting according to USA Today‘s Sergio Non. The new deal comes after Condit’s most recent victory over Carlo Prater in February. The fight against Prater was Condit’s second to last fight on his previous deal. Condit expects the new deal to kick in with a potential fight in August against an opponent yet to be named.
The promotion also confirmed two additional bouts for their next scheduled event on June 1st in Sacramento, California over the weekend via their official website. A rumored bantamweight title bout between champion Miguel Torres and injury replacement Yoshiro Maeda has been made official as well as Mark Munoz’s WEC debut against fellow newcomer Chuck Grigsby.
UFC Releases Travis Lutter
Fresh off of his disappointing loss to former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin at UFC 83 last weekend, Travis Lutter, the middleweight winner of the fourth season of “The Ultimate Fighter”, has been released from his contract by the UFC. The news was first reported by Pramit Mohapatra of Fight Ticker and has since been confirmed by Lutter himself, who stated that his agent received a call Sunday morning informing him of his release due to consecutive losses in his last two fights.
Report: Southworth-Ruiz Rematch Possible for June
Bobby Southworth, one of the cast members on the original season of “The Ultimate Fighter” will attempt to avenge a recent loss to Anthony Ruiz at Strikeforce’s upcoming planned event in June according to MMA Mania. The two fought in November - Ruiz scored a TKO win over Southworth after the UFC veteran suffered a fight-ending cut over his left eye early in the second round.
However Southworth remains Strikeforce’s world light heavyweight champion due to the fight being a non-title bout. It’s unknown whether or not the belt will be on the line in June. Southworth has not fought since losing to Ruiz. Meanwhile Ruiz has recorded back-to-back wins over Jimmy Ambriz and Brad Imes since then.
Assuerio Silva weighs-in for UFC 70: Nations Collide. Photo property of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
After vacating his King of Pancrase Heavyweight title, Assuerio Silva has reportedly agreed to a five-fight deal with Hardcore Championship Fighting.
The news comes from a recent interview with Silva by Brazilian web site Tatame.
“I’ve signed with HCF and my first fight will be on May 10th,” Silva stated in the report. “I’m not sure who it will be against yet. I believe that they’ll probably give me an opponent next month, after their next event on March 29th.”
Silva has not fought since he defeated Tatsuya Mizuno for the vacant King of Pancrase Heavyweight belt last May. He was originally slated to make his first title defense this past fall but opponent Kestutis “Tiger” Arbocius pulled a no-show just hours before the event was set to take place.
According to Silva, his decision to sign with another promotion stems from a lack of activity while with Pancrase and wanting to field better offers from different organizations. In the end, Silva felt that HCF was the best opportunity for him.
“I vacated the belt because I wanted to wait for offers from a better organization,” Silva said. They started making offers but I still wasn’t fighting for three to four months. The last time I was supposed to fight, the opponent didn’t even show up and I haven’t fought since. HCF made an offer and contacted Pancrase. We’d agreed to vacate the title and now I’m headed elsewhere.”
Touch of gloves to MMA Weekly for the find.

Another episode is on this evening in it’s normal time slot at 8:00 PM EST on NBC.
Cage Potato says that last night’s episode was terrible. I think it was bad but not that bad, with a few changes it’ll be better.

Matyushenko and Palaszewski Move to Chicago IFL Team
IFL light heavyweight champ Vladimir Matyushenko and popular lightweight Bart Palaszewski have opted to leave their respective teams and join the new Chicago franchise in the IFL according to The Fight Network:
According to Palaszewski, the team will be affiliated with former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski’s team and trainers, and will include former Chicago Red Bear Mark Miller (8-2), and IFL light heavyweight champion Vladimir Matyushenko (20-3). Matyushenko transferred from the now-defunct Los Angeles Sabres team.
Palaszewski said the team will train at Sean Bormet’s Overtime School of Wrestling in suburban Naperville, home of Arlovski and Team Pitbull. Overtime’s coaching staff is comprised of wrestling standouts Bormet, Kerry Boumans, and John Kading, along with boxing trainer Mike Garcia and jiu-jitsu specialist Dino Costeas.
I thought it was the Tokyo Sabres and the Los Angeles Anacondas but whatever…
