UFC on FX 3 Lands in Florida Following “Hometown Throwdown” Contest

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to the state of Florida for the first time since February 2009 for UFC on FX 3, which will now take place at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise after the city of Fort Lauderdale won the "Hometown Throwdown" contest in conjunction with the UFC and Harley-Davidson.

The UFC announced the results this afternoon. UFC on FX 3 will be headlined by the continuation of the UFC's inaugural flyweight title tournament, which will see a rematch between Ian McCall and Demetrious Johnson with the winner meeting Joseph Benavidez for the first-ever UFC flyweight title belt later this year.

McCall and Johnson drew in their first meeting, an exciting back-and-forth battle at UFC on FX 2 earlier this month. A fourth overtime round was not used as Johnson was originally declared the bout's winner by split decision before an error tabulating the judges' scorecards revealed the fight was actually even.

Other rumored bouts for the event include a welterweight battle between longtime veterans Mike Pyle and Josh Neer as well as another pivotal 170 lb clash between standout wrestler Charlie Brenneman and rising Brazilian prospect Erick Silva.

Ebersole has won all three of his UFC bouts to date, most recently winning a controversial split decision over Claude Patrick at UFC 140 in December. UFC veteran Brian Foster has been forced out of Bellator's upcoming season-six welterweight tournament due to additional screening needed in order to gain medical clearance to fight. He will be replaced by Blackhouse member and 170 lb prospect Jordan Smith. Foster missed nearly a year of action after suffering a brain hemorrhage in the winter of 2010. No word on whether or not that contributed to his removal from the tournament. [Bellator.com]

— The New York State Senate has voted to legalize the sport of mixed martial arts and the fate of yet another attempt to bring the world's fastest growing sport to the Empire State will once again go through the State Assembly, which has shot down such a bill multiple times in years past. [New York Post]

— A proposted UFC featherweight title bout between reigning champion Jose Aldo and top contender Chad Mendes, originally targeted for a UFC event in August, has essentially been scrapped. Citing wear and tear from his hard-fought win over Mark Hominick in April, Aldo's management team has stated that their fighter won't be returning to action until the fall. Mendes has instead opted to fight in August regardless against a different opponent rather than sit on the sidelines and wait for a title shot. [MMA Weekly]

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has added two recently rumored preliminary bouts to complete the fight card for UFC 128: Shogun vs. Evans, which is set to take place on March 19 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

Riding momentum from an upset of heralded prospect John Hathaway, seasoned veteran Mike Pyle will return to action against grappling expert Ricardo Almeida and Dan Miller will join his brother Jim at the event, taking on oft-injured Nick Catone.

Prior to the Hathaway contest, Pyle had struggled in the UFC, splitting a quartet of bouts. Almeida bounced back from a tough loss to Matt Hughes last summer, winning a decision over T.J. Grant at UFC 124 last month.

“Night of Combat II” Fight Card Changes

Following a reported positive test for marijuana, Bryson Kamaka has been taken off from tonight’s “Night of Combat II” card, which is being promoted by Kim Couture’s KC Concepts and Scott Kelp’s Superfights MMA and will take place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The news comes from a report by Five Ounces of Pain.

MMA on Tap has since been able to confirm through the management team of former IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron, who was Kamaka’s original opponent, that he will now face local product Chris Kennedy at the event.

Kennedy, who currently fights out of Las Vegas, has won his last three fights, most recently earning a third-round submission of Mike Arranz at Jeremy Horn’s Elite Fight Night on July 12. Kennedy has also gone the distance with fellow welterweight prospect Josh Williams and “Ultimate Fighter” cast member Joe Duarte during his brief career.

Hieron has not competed since successfully defending his IFL belt against former U.S. Marine Mark Miller in April. He became the IFL’s first-ever welterweight champion after defeating Donnie Liles and Delson Heleno in consecutive fights. The Long Island native is currently keeping in shape by training at Xtreme Couture. He was originally slated to take on Drew Fickett on October 11 at Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” show before it was postponed until early next year.
