Previewing UFC on Fox 5: The Main Card

The UFC hits Seattle on Saturday night with UFC on Fox 5 which is arguably their most stacked card of the year. In the main event, Benson Henderson defends his lightweight title against Nate Diaz. Henderson, who is riding a five fight winning streak, will look to prove his doubters wrong when he takes on the versatile Stockton, California native.

The card also includes an intriguing welterweight matchup between BJ Penn and Rory MacDonald. Penn, who is coming out of retirement, has a lot to prove after a lackluster two years in the octagon. He’ll be in tough with MacDonald who has consistently looked stronger with each outing.

Rounding out the main card is a light heavyweight showdown between former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Alexander Gustafsson plus a welterweight clash between Mike Swick and Matt Brown.

For those complaining about the lack of depth for UFC cards recently, the announcement of a title fight and two high-profile bouts between contenders for the UFC's next show on FOX should be enough to generate some excitement again.

UFC on FOX 5 will be headlined by Benson Henderson, who defended his UFC lightweight championship just this past weekend against Frankie Edgar, taking on Nate Diaz in a 155 lb title bout.

Also featured on the network television broadcast will be decorated veteran Mauricio "Shogun" Rua facing top rising light heavyweight prospect Alexander Gustafsson and the return of future hall-of-famer B.J. Penn against highly-touted youngster Rory MacDonald.

The show will take place on December 8 at a location yet to be announced. A fourth fight will also be featured on the main card and will be announced in the coming weeks.

Event of the Year: UFC 139

The usual pre-event hype for UFC 139 just wasn't there. The UFC's first foray into the San Jose area following their surprising acquisition of Bay Area mainstay Strikeforce happened to be sandwiched in between the organization's network television debut on FOX, pitting Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos in a UFC heavyweight title bout, and the finale of the fourteenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter" the show's last on Spike.

It wasn't as if the fight card was lacking. Dan Henderson's return to the Octagon against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua was a barnburner of a headliner. Wanderlei Silva facing Cung Le and Urijah Faber going up against Brian Bowles aren't bad co-main events either. The advertising just wasn't there.

Still, UFC 139 delivered to say the least...

— After Rashad Evans went down with injury, it was Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, not Jon Jones, who was first approached about facing Mauricio "Shogun" Rua on March 19. However, Jackson declined, stating that it would not be enough time for him to prepare for Rua nor get into proper fight shape. [MMAJunkie.com]

— The Nevada State Athletic Commission today released the list of medical suspensions stemming from UFC 126 this past weekend. The most notable suspensions were handed out to Forrest Griffin and Jake Ellenberger, who could be sidelined until August with a broken foot and a pair of broken hands respectively. [MMA Weekly]

Following his submission victory over Ryan Bader at UFC 126 on Saturday night, rising UFC light heavyweight star Jon Jones was handed one of the biggest surprises of his life - a shot at champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Jones has accepted a short-notice fight against Rua at UFC 128 on March 19, which will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

His training partner, Rashad Evans, who stayed on the sidelines since last May for a chance at regaining his title against Rua, will now be unable to train for 4-6 weeks due to a sprained MCL ligament and may require surgery at a later date.

Report: Shogun Agrees to Machida Bout

Former PRIDE Fighting Championship standout Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has reportedly agreed in principle to face newly-crowned UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at a yet-to-be-announced UFC event this fall.

According to MMA Weekly, sources are stating that the bout would likely take place in either October or November. The news comes as a sort of lack of surprise due to the fact that UFC President Dana White released a photo of Rua visiting the Zuffa offices earlier this week and looked to be signing some sort of contract.

“Shogun” nows looks to be challenging Machida in his first title defense on the hells of top contender Quinton “Rampage” Jackson opting to forego a title shot in order to coach against fellow former champion Rashad Evans on the upcoming tenth season of “The Ultimate Fighter”.
