Quick Hits: Four Bouts Added to UFC 99, Goulet Returns & More

Here are your news and notes for the morning of March 12, 2009.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship yesterday announced four additional bouts for its inaugural trek to Germany for UFC 99 on June 13. A pair of welterweights matchups will now grace the televised portion of the card: Mike Swick vs. Ben Saunders and Marcus Davis vs. Dan Hardy. Also revealed was a lightweight fight between Dennis Siver and Dale Hartt and a heavyweight clash involving Stefan Struve and Denis Stojnic. [UFC.com]

A 155 lb matchup between rising British lightweight prospect Paul Kelly and “Ultimate Fighter 8” alumnus Roli Delgado will reportedly also be added to UFC 99 in the coming days. The fight will be the first at lightweight for Kelly, who spent his previous nine career fights competing at welterweight, where he last defeated Troy Mandaloniz via unanimous decision in February. Canadian veteran Jonathan Goulet will reportedly return to action at UFC 100 in July against Dong-Hyun Kim. Goulet has not fought since suffering a quick TKO loss to Mike Swick at the UFC’s “Fight for the Troops” event last December because of a lingering knee injury. Kim suffered his first professional loss at UFC 94 in January, dropping a split decision to Karo Parisyan. [MFight News]

In a fight in which the loser may find himself on his way out of the UFC, former standout amateur wrestler Matt Grice will apparently take on Shannon Gugerty at UFC 100 in July as well. Both fighters are coming off recent losses. Grice fell to Matt Veach at February’s UFC Fight Night 17 in his first fight in over a year while Gugerty was last submitted by Spencer Fisher at UFC 90 last October. [MMA Weekly]

Dana White’s UFC 93 Video Blog (Part III)

Here’s the third part of UFC President Dana White’s video blog for this Saturday’s UFC 93 event. In this edition, White does some weightlifting at a gym in Ireland, checks out the O2 Arena where UFC 93 will be held, and talks with Marcus Davis, Chris Lytle, and Rich Franklin.

Report: Davis-Lytle Set for UFC 93

It seems like Marcus Davis got his wish and will fight in the UFC’s next venture to Ireland after all. The former professional boxer will reportedly clash with Chris Lytle in a welterweight bout that will take place at UFC 93 on January 17 according to MMA Junkie.

Bout agreements have apparently been distributed but have not yet been returned. However both fighters have verbally agreed to fight. Both Lytle and Davis have discussed their desire to fight each other in the past and both made a mention of it once again following their respective victories at UFC 89 last month.

Davis recently bounced back from an unanimous decision loss to Mike Swick in June to submit England native Paul Kelly at UFC 89 on October 18 while Lytle earned “Fight of the Night” honors after defeating Paul Taylor in a three-round war on the feet at the same show.

Davis-Kelly, Brown-Kim Likely for UFC in Fall

A pair of separate welterweight bouts are more than likely to take place inside the confines of the UFC this fall: Marcus Davis will attempt to bounce back from a recent loss in taking on Paul Kelly while former “Ultimate Fighter” cast member Matt Brown has been offered a fight against undefeated Korean standout Dong-Hyun Kim.

Kelly, who was previously rumored as taking on Sam Stout, has told MMA Weekly that he will fight Davis at UFC 89: Bisping vs Leben in October while Brown and Kim will probably clash at UFC 88: Breakthrough in Atlanta in September according to our friends at MMA Junkie.

Kelly was victorious in his UFC debut back in January, winning an exciting unanimous decision over fellow England native Paul Taylor. Meanwhile Davis had his run to the UFC’s welterweight title halted at the hands of Mike Swick at UFC 85: Bedlam in June. The decision loss was Davis’ first defeat in close to three years.

Brown, a former member of Tito Ortiz’s Team Punishment, picked up his second career win over Matt Arroyo at The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rampage vs Team Forrest Finale late last month, stopping Arroyo with strikes in the second round. Kim remains undefeated thus far in his professional career. He was impressive in his UFC debut, stopping Jason Tan by way of elbows in the third round of their bout at UFC 84: Ill Will in May.

Alves Hands Hughes Another Loss in London

All things must eventually come to an end.

Matt Hughes hasn’t officially retired, but his career is now visibly coming to an end. While two straight losses to current welterweight king Georges St. Pierre are nothing to be alarmed about, Hughes, who once said that he would hang up the gloves before becoming anyone’s highlight reel, was stunned again yesterday afternoon at the UFC’s latest event in London courtesy of a Thiago Alves’ flying knee.

Alves, who failed to make weight for the fight and forced the bout to take place at a catch-weight of 174 lbs, was in control from the start of the fight, evading multiple takedown attempts from Hughes, a former All-American collegiate wrestler.

However Hughes was eventually able to take Alves down to the canvas late in the first round. Despite not mounting much offense, Hughes was able to control Alves from top position for a good portion of the round before Alves reversed position and worked some ground-and-pound of his own before the horn sounded to end the stanza.

The second round saw Hughes take a knee to the face after trying another early takedown. The blow opened a cut near the former champion’s mouth and Hughes found himself on his back and avoiding strikes from Alves yet again. After landing a few hard punches, a scramble allowed both fighters to get back to their feet.

Alves then rushed Hughes and connected with a flying knee that sent the Miletich Fighting Systems product crumbling to the mat, his left knee awkwardly bending behind him. Alves pounced on a defenseless Hughes and connected with a couple of unanswered shots before referee Herb Dean stepped in to halt the bout.
