Kimbo Slice to Fight Roy Nelson on Next Week’s “TUF 10” Episode

Even if you didn’t watch last night’s episode of “The Ultimate Fighter 10”, you’ve probably heard about it anyway. Former EliteXC star Kimbo Slice will step into the UFC’s Octagon for the first time to face former IFL heavyweight champion and “TUF 10” tournament favorite Roy Nelson on next week’s episode on Spike. Above is a little video previewing the bout between the two.

Quote of the Day: Jared Shaw on EliteXC Collapse

Kimbo Slice. Photo by Esther Lin/EliteXC.

“Do I think the Kimbo’s loss was the demise of the company like it’s being portrayed? Absolutely, 100 percent, no,” Shaw said. What I do think the Kimbo loss did was probably throw away any last ditch efforts of CBS acquiring the company, or having enough money to hang on to get another buyer to come in. But I knew for a while that this company was done. When I spoke to you guys and said I’m clearing a runway in September for El Paso to get to October, no, that’s not it at all. We just couldn’t put on the show.”

— Former EliteXC executive Jared Shaw talks to MMA Weekly about the demise of the organization following Kimbo Slice’s loss to Seth Petruzelli during EliteXC’s final show to date last October.

It’s interesting to see how Shaw denies that Slice losing was the reason why EliteXC folded only to completely contradict his notion in the very next sentence. Besides their financial decisions and corrupt management, putting the entire company on Slice’s shoulders and having him crumble was the biggest reason why EliteXC is no more.

It’s also key to note that Jared is finally admitting that the EliteXC show that was schedule to take place at the University of New Mexico last September was canceled because they simply only had enough money for one last show. The news of the show’s cancellation came the same day as one of their ShoXC cards and I remember scrambling to get some kind of official comment from a ProElite staffer only for there to be nothing at all.

Strikeforce Acquires ProElite Assets; Lands Deal With Showtime

It’s been a busy past few weeks for Scott Coker and his fledgling Strikeforce brand. Once thought to have been just a small success story in the San Jose area, the promotion seems to be on the fast track to becoming the legitimate number-two MMA organization in North America after securing a deal to purchase a limited number of assets from ProElite, the parent company of EliteXC.

Under the terms of the deal announced this afternoon, Strikeforce will acquire a select number of fighters contracts, along with the ability to sign additional fighters to Strikeforce deals, as well as a video library of past EliteXC and ShoXC events.

“This is a tremendous development that will bolster the Strikeforce roster and allow us to produce even more competitive matchups between top fighters,” Coker said in a press release today. “Some of these athletes have been on the sidelines for a while now and are eagerly waiting to return to competition. We look forward to providing them with the opportunity to do so in the next few months.”

Report: Petruzelli Agrees to Rematch With Kimbo Slice

Seth Petruzelli, a former contestant on the second season of “The Ultimate Fighter” that gained instant fame after dispatching of former street fighter turned mixed martial artist Kimbo Slice at EliteXC’s “Heat” event in October, has reportedly agreed to a rematch against Slice in March of next year.

According to comments attributed to Petruzelli by MMA Weekly’s “MMA Insider Blog”, the former K-1 kickboxer has received offers to compete at a yet-to-be-announced Strikeforce event and an unknown show in China as well, but has also agreed to fight Slice for a second time in Tampa Bay, Florida and is waiting for a response from his camp:

Petruzelli maintains that he’s agreed to the rematch, and is awaiting word from Slice’s camp. It’s a fight he feels is needed to sustain the jolt in momentum created by the 14 second knockout at Elite XC’s final dance on Oct. 4.

“I just need to prove more my second time around, if I fight him, or I fight anybody else,” Petruzelli said. “I need to do the exact same thing…just to prove it wasn’t a fluke. That’s been my main driving goal, to train my ass off.”

Reger’s Rant Oct 15, 2008

EliteXC Doubletalk

Apparently, Jeremy Lappen is making it a habit of saying the wrong things in recent days.  Courtesy of MMAWeekly

The Florida State Boxing Commission on Tuesday released the final gate figures and medical suspensions for EliteXC’s “Heat” on Oct. 4 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

“There were 6,854 paid attendees for $677,793 in gross gate revenue. An additional 847 tickets were given out as “comps,” adding up to $97,542 in uncounted revenue. 7,701 people attended the event in all.

At the post-fight press conference, EliteXC Head of Fight Operations Jeremy Lappen originally reported that 9,414 fans attended the event with 7,723 paid attendees for a live gate of $826,000.

So much for the place being “sold out” as Lappen and Jared Shaw continued to say the day before the event.

With the news coming of last weeks consistent flip flops and accusations of being misquoted, despite being on tape, someone in the EXC PR department may want to tell Mr. Lappen to quiet down a bit.

What are Anderson Silva’s plans?

A few weeks ago, UFC Middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva made waves by saying he planned on retiring soon.  Soon thereafter, his manager Ed Soares discounted the reports as Anderson just having fun.  But now a new video has shown up on Sherdog in which Anderson continues to say his time in mixed martial arts is basically over.

The UFC really needs to get to the bottom of this before Silva basically pulls a Couture and calls Zuffa to say he is retiring.
