UFC 77 Medical Suspensions Announced

The Ohio Athletic Commission has released the official list of medical suspensions stemming from UFC 77: Hostile Territory.

Kalib Starnes, Eric Schafer, and Rich Franklin have all been medically suspended for 30 days because of precautionary reasons. Franklin’s medical suspension will most likely become longer because of the surgery he underwent to correct a second straight broken nose. I’m sure Starnes will need some extra time because of his cut as well.

Forrest Petz has been medically suspended for 60 days and will need clearance from a doctor before he is permitted to fight again. There was is no indictation behind the reasoning for Petz having to be medically cleared.

- Evan Tanner is looking for sponsors for his friend Ian Dawe who will be fighting at a couple of upcoming shows later this year, including King of the Cage. Contact him here for information.

- Kalib Starnes posted the real story behind his controversial cut suffered during his bout against Alan Belcher this past weekend at UFC 77 in Sherdog’s forums:

I got hit with an elbow early in the first round. In the second round the ref stopped the action so the doctor could look at the cut. The doctor said “How is your vision?” I said “There’s blood in my eye.” Yves Lavigne said, “If you say you can’t see he’ll stop the fight.” I said, “I can see, there’s no problem, I want to fight.” The doctor spread the cut open with his thumbs and said “I can see his skull, I’m stopping it.” I said “I want to continue” and looked at my cornerman.

My cornerman was staring at my cut and yelling “Why are you stopping the fight?”, “What are you doing?” His comments were directed at the referee, but because he was staring at me, I was confused. That is why I became so angry, because I did not quit, and I thought that he was accusing me of quitting. We sorted things out afterwards. That’s something that bothers me a lot after Ken Shamrock said that I was not injured on that show when I had a serious injury. I still take a lot of heat for that son of a bitches ignorant comments.

- Paulo Filho and Thiago Silva have both joined Team Link.

- MMA News interviewed Brock Lesnar over the weekend who apparently already knows when and who he is fighting in his UFC debut.

News and Notes

- Our rumors section has been updated…

- Our UFC 71 coverage will include our usual predictions on Friday and one of our patented live blogs on Saturday night of course…

- Scott went ahead and updated his mega post concerning the big possibility that the K-1 Dynamite!! USA might not be happening because of K-1 parent company FEG continually failing to adhere to the requests of the CSAC.

- Loretta Hunt of The Fight Network is reporting that Randy Couture and Wanderlei Silva will sit down at some point this week to discuss the possibility of Silva training and teaching at Couture’s gym in Las Vegas.

“Wanderlei and I sat down with our wives and we had lunch in Ohio,” said Couture. “He’s a very nice guy and we are both very interested in getting together to train. I’m looking for some Muay Thai influence to go with Xtreme Couture’s wrestling and other offerings, so there is a good possibility this could happen.”

- Speaking of Couture, he will also be filming a documentary for National Geographic this week titled “Fight Science”. The special will also include Bas Rutten and Dean Lister and will take a look at the mechanics behind the art of fighting.

- The latest issue of Sports Illustrated features UFC lightweight contender Roger Huerta on the front cover and has a feature article on the sport of MMA inside.

News and Notes

- Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic will be facing Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 70 in Manchester, England.

- ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ veterans Chris Leben and Kalib Starnes will clash in the octagon at some point in May.

- UFCJunkie.com is reporting that Team Jackson fighter Nathan Marquardt has been granted at title shot at UFC 72.

- In a recent article on Sherdog.com, Josh Gross reported that Brandon Vera’s final UFC fight will come against heavyweight prospect Jake O’Brien.

I do have it on good authority, though, that Vera will fight Jake O’Brien. All signs point to the UFC doing anything it can to leave a black mark on Vera as he appears headed in another direction.
