Goulet to Face Axworthy at TKO 29

MMA on Tap has confirmed that UFC veteran Jonathan “The Road Warrior” Goulet (17-7) will face Travis Axworthy (3-0) in a middleweight affair at TKO 29: Reprecussion.

Goulet was originally scheduled to face Steve Vigneault for the TKO welterweight title but the fight was canned after Vigneault injured his knee putting the fight on the shelf for the second time. With Vigneault injured, Goulet has decided to make the move to the middleweight division for the time being. According to Goulet, “It’s going to be easier for me to cut my weight because I’m now walking around at 205 lbs.  My weight class for the UFC is going to be 170 lbs but right now I want to fight more often and because of that I’m going to fight in the 185 lbs weight class.  I ‘m feeling good at this weight. I think it will be difficult at this weight but I’ll do my best as usual.”

When asked about how Goulet felt not getting his crack at the TKO welterweight title, he said, “Right now I don’t care about the title.  I’m going to fight at that weight class, if I’m doing great and the opportunity to fight for a title comes to me, I’ll take that belt but right now I’m not thinking about that.  The first step is on June 1st, then I’m probably going to fight at the end of this month and the day after my birthday.”

TKO 29: Reprecussion is scheduled for June 1st, 2007 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.

Steve Vigneault Injured, Cote vs. Wallace to Headline TKO 29

UFC veteran Steve Vigneault has suffered an injury which has forced him to withdraw from his upcoming title fight with Jonathan Goulet at TKO 29: Reprecussion. The fight was originally scheduled to take place at TKO 28: Inevitable but again Vigneault was forced to drop the fight when it was announced he injured his knee during training.

According to The Fight Network:

TKO President Stephane Patry is in the process of trying to find a replacement opponent for Goulet. It’s been rumored that Team Tompkins welterweight Chris Clements (4-1-0) might be an option for the “Road Warrior” at TKO 29.

In a recent interview on Fight Opinion Radio, Goulet also made mention of Chris Clements as a possible opponent.

TKO 29 will now be headlined by a middleweight title bout between Patrick “The Predator” Cote (9-4 MMA, 6-0 TKO) and Crafton Wallace (12-3-1 MMA, 0-0 TKO). Crafton Wallace is a tough Muay Thai specialist who has spent time fighting in the UFC, KOTC and AFC. Wallace had a tough run in the UFC going 0-2 with submission losses to Nathan Marquardt and Martin Kampmann. As for Cote, it’s been nearly two years but he is finally ready to return to the organization he once called home.

TKO 29: Reprecussion

Jonathan Goulet (14-3 TKO) vs. TBA *

Goulet-Schulte Changed to a No Contest

The Quebec Athletic Commission has changed Jonathan Goulet vs. Thomas Schulte to a no contest. Both Goulet and Schulte’s manager Sam Bean sent written requests to the QAC to have the decision overturned.

For those of you that don’t know what happened - let me fill you in. At TKO 28: Inevitable Goulet and Schulte battled on the canvas for the better part of the first round as Schulte was latched onto Goulet’s back. Late in the round the referee decided to stand the fight up and moments later Goulet charged forward connecting with a flurry of punches that sent Schulte to the canvas. The ensuing ground and pound was too much as Schulte was rocked but when the referee pounced to call the fight the bell had already sounded to end the first round. Goulet was declared the winner by TKO at 5:00 of the first.

If Goulet is able to beat Steve Vigneault at TKO 29: Repercussion, he will then rematch Schulte in what will be Goulet’s first title defense. I will try to get Goulet’s thoughts on the situation later today.

ADCC News: Big Announcements in April?

Antonio Inoki
Does anyone remember this man? He was at the very first show of the IFL, and before everyone noticed, he had some ex-body builder running his team Tokyo Sabres. On March 14th, Inoki officially announced that as of April 1st, he is starting a new martial arts promotion called Inoki Genome Federation. (IGF) The head of organization is none other than Anotonio Inoki but other executives and staff are still unknown till this date. The only prediction we can make at this point is that his son-law, Simon Kelly Inoki, just revealed his resignation from New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s president post, probably to join his father in-law’s new promotion. Besides this, no one knows what is going to take place with this new project by Mr. Inoki. All we can tell at this point, is that everyone is making big announcements in April.

News and Notes

- According to reports, all of the fighter’s drug tests from UFC 68 came back clean. Surprisingly the Ohio Athletic Commission only tested Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, Jon Fitch, and Luigi Fioravanti.

- UFC Junkie is reporting that Tito Ortiz vs. Rashad Evans will take place at UFC 72. It was originally thought they would fight at UFC 71.

- Josh Barnett released a message on his Myspace blog yesterday stating that it was unlikely he would be appearing on the upcoming PRIDE 34 card. More PRIDE drama…

There are some rumors thaty I will be fighting on the next PRIDE show, April 8th. Well I wish I could say there was much truth to it but at this point it doesn’t look very likely at all.

I had been training on a schedule to fight on the now canceled April 28th show and was contacted about now fighting on the 8th. Even though this would cut my time to train significantly, I was still receptive to fighting and planned to fight anyway. But at this point PRIDE has been unwilling or unable to make a match happen. We have yet to make any headway in booking a match and ,to me, it seems as though they are not even trying.

- The UFC has officially released a message on The Ultimate Fighter 6 tryouts. Here is their message and the TUF 6 application.

UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter® season 6 welterweight fighter tryouts will be held at the Palms Hotel and Casino, Tuesday, April 10th beginning at 8am PT.

If you’d like to compete for a spot on the next season, fill out the application and send it to the address on the application. It must be postmarked no later than April 7th.
