Kenny Florian throws a knee at Joe Lauzon. Photo property of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The ‘Battle of Boston’ went in Kenny Florian’s favor last night as he relentlessly pressured fellow Massachusetts native Joe Lauzon before ultimately stopping his foe with an onslaught of unanswered strikes during the latest edition of UFC Fight Night at the at the Broomfield Events Center in Denver, Colorado.
What originally was booked as a friendly matchup between two lightweight contenders slowly evolved into a heated exchange of pre-fight trash talking. The tension between the two was evident from the start of the fight as an intense staredown changed into a quick exchange of punches.
Lauzon quickly down Florian down in the first minute. An unorthodox attempt by Florian to use elbows from the bottom was foiled by referee Herb Dean after one of the blows cut the back of Lauzon’s head open. Florian then used solid submission defense to escape knee bar and heel hook attempts before eventually closing out the round delivering strikes from the top position.
Florian turned up the heat at the start of the second round. A swift body kick led to Florian scoring a takedown and transitioning to half-guard. The veteran of the inaugural season of “The Ultimate Fighter” then rained down unanswered punches and elbows on Lauzon for nearly two full minutes. Despite a good job of covering up and limiting damage, Dean decided that Lauzon had enough, moving Florian even closer to another shot at the lightweight title that was once in his reach.
“Joe’s a great competitor and I knew it was gonna be a tough fight,” Florian said after the bout. “That’s what I wanted.”
Interested in owning a UFC championship belt like the one above? How about the exact one above? Got $30,000 to spare? Well former UFC heavyweight champ Ricco Rodriguez is selling the title he won from Randy Couture at UFC 39 on eBay in hopes of raising money for a school Rodriguez will be opening down south.
Tim Sylvia calls Fedor a bad word
Former UFC heavyweight champion had some choice words for Fedor Emelianenko during a post-UFC 79 interview with Gary Herman of CBS Sports. When asked about Emelianenko, Sylvia stated that he feels the former PRIDE champ is ducking top competition:
“I think he’s being a (expletive),” said Sylvia. “I think Fedor is very good, but you have to fight the top level competitors all the time to keep that status, and he is just not doing that.”
According to Five Ounces of Pain, the bad word had something to do with a pussy, whatever that is…

We are excited to have the opportunity to work with Alessio, who is known for his explosive stand up style of fighting. We look forward to working with Alessio and help him improve his overall mma game and take him to the top!
Sakara returns at UFC 80: Rapid Fire later this month when he takes on newcomer James Lee. The fight is expected to be Sakara’s last at 205 lbs as he has expressed plans to move down to the middleweight division following the fight.
We will have a brand new MMA on Tap Top 10 posted later today. Our rumors page has been updated. Randy Couture will be hosting a charity poker tournament at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on January 12th. Couture, Jamie Gold, and Dean Cain are all expected to participate. Leland Rolling takes a look at what’s next for Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. A matchup between Jake Bostwick and John Phillips has been added to Cage Rage 25 according to The Fight Network.
UFC lightweight contenders Kenny Florian and Joe Lauzon have verbally agreed to face each other in the main event of the next UFC Fight Night scheduled for April 2nd.
The news comes from a report by Loretta Hunt of The Fight Network.
Contracts have yet to be sent out to the fighters but are expected to be sent out, signed, and returned within the next few weeks.
Florian has been riding a wave of confidence since losing a UFC lightweight title opportunity to Sean Sherk last year, winning his last three fights in impressive fashion. He submitted Din Thomas in his last bout at UFC Fight Night 11 in September after Thomas suffered multiple injuries to his knee during a takedown attempt in the fight.
Lauzon stopped former champ Jens Pulver with strikes in his UFC debut in 2006 only to take 9 month hiatus to be on the cast of the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter. Lauzon lost in the semifinals of the reality show to Manny Gamburyan. Since the show ended, Lauzon has defeated Brandon Melendez and Jason Reinhardt in consecutive bouts.

Joe Lauzon and UFC newcomer Jason Reinhardt have both confirmed that they will be fighting each other at UFC 78 in New Jersey according to The Fight Network.
Lauzon stated that he would begin training today with former UFC Welterweight Champion B.J. Penn in Hawaii. Lauzon is undefeated so far in the UFC, stopping former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver with strikes and submitting fellow Ultimate Fighter 5 castmate Brandon Melendez is consecutive fights.
Speaking of being undefeated, Reinhardt holds a perfect record of 18-0 in his MMA career. While all of his wins have come against weaker opponents in smaller shows, Reinhardt’s resume shows that he is a legit signing for the UFC.
An interesting thing that Lauzon discussed was how Reinhardt got the bout - the same way how Lauzon was hooked up with Pulver:
“[UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva is probably sick of Jason emailing him, and it’s my job to shut him up,” says Lauzon. “That’s how I got the fight with Jens, and that’s how Jason is getting in now. He is praying for lightning to strike twice, but it’s not gonna happen.”

I tried to read my contract with Pride, it was too much for me so I let Team Quest handle that part of my career. They know better than me.
