Nick Diaz Under the Gun With Strikeforce and Showtime?

Prior to Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg, Nick Diaz was scheduled to take on Jay Hieron for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title. All of that was thrown out the window when Diaz decided to skip a mandatory drug test administered by the California State Athletic Commission.

Strikeforce and Showtime executives were displeased with the situation and when forced to find a replacement they called upon The Ultimate Fighter 7 alumni Jesse Taylor and placed his bout with Hieron on the non-televised section of the August 15 card.

Scott Coker and Ken Hershman recently spoke with ESPN Radio’s Steve Cofield where they provided their thoughts on Diaz and what steps the organization and network will take in the future.

From the opening bell, the fight had a feverish pace as Cyborg immediately came forward and put the pressure on Carano with a flurry of hard strikes against the cage. As Cyborg attempted an early takedown, fans saw Carano sweep Cyborg and gain the mount. Before Carano could put up any offense, Cyborg went for a quick heel hook but Carano calmly escaped.

Report: Hieron to Face High at Affliction II

Former IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron will reportedly take on undefeated prospect Jason High in a yet-to-be-announced bout at Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” event on January 24 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California according to Five Ounces of Pain. Sources close to the fight have stated that the fight has likely been finalized.

Hieron, who currently trains out of Las Vegas-based Xtreme Couture, last fought at “Night of Combat II” on October 11, where he defeated last-minute replacement opponent Chris Kennedy via unanimous decision. Hieron had been slated to fight Drew Fickett prior to Affliction’s decision to move the event to early next year.

Like his counterpart, High was also scheduled to be part of Affliction’s second show before it’s postponement, previously signing to fight Mike Pyle. High sports a perfect 6-0 record thus far in his professional career. He most recently submitted Markhaile Wedderburn with a first-round guillotine choke at a Iroquois Mixed Martial Arts Championships event in June.

“Night of Combat II” Fight Card Changes

Following a reported positive test for marijuana, Bryson Kamaka has been taken off from tonight’s “Night of Combat II” card, which is being promoted by Kim Couture’s KC Concepts and Scott Kelp’s Superfights MMA and will take place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The news comes from a report by Five Ounces of Pain.

MMA on Tap has since been able to confirm through the management team of former IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron, who was Kamaka’s original opponent, that he will now face local product Chris Kennedy at the event.

Kennedy, who currently fights out of Las Vegas, has won his last three fights, most recently earning a third-round submission of Mike Arranz at Jeremy Horn’s Elite Fight Night on July 12. Kennedy has also gone the distance with fellow welterweight prospect Josh Williams and “Ultimate Fighter” cast member Joe Duarte during his brief career.

Hieron has not competed since successfully defending his IFL belt against former U.S. Marine Mark Miller in April. He became the IFL’s first-ever welterweight champion after defeating Donnie Liles and Delson Heleno in consecutive fights. The Long Island native is currently keeping in shape by training at Xtreme Couture. He was originally slated to take on Drew Fickett on October 11 at Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” show before it was postponed until early next year.
