Evening News and Notes: Condit Headed to UFC; Nover-Bradley at UFC 98 & More

- It appears that WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit could be headed to the UFC after all. Days after a Five Ounces of Pain report suggested that the WEC was attempting to match Condit up against Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 18 in April after Condit was forced out of his March 1 title defense against Brock Larson due to injury, MMA Junkie is reporting that has been signed for the event, essentially signaling the end for the WEC’s 170 lb. division. In semi-related news, Dann Stupp and company are also saying that “Ultimate Fighter 8” runner-up Philippe Nover will likely return to action against Kyle Bradley at UFC 98.

WEC Announces Full Card for “Varner vs. Cerrone”

World Extreme Cagefighting has released the complete fight card for it’s upcoming WEC 38 event on January 25 at the San Diego Sports Arena in California where WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner will defend his title against rising contender Donald Cerrone.

The show’s co-main event will feature a rematch between former champions as Urijah Faber will attempt to bounce back from his recent loss to Mike Thomas Brown against one-time UFC lightweight title holder Jens Pulver. Faber won an unanimous decision over Pulver in a 2008 fight-of-the-year candidate back on June 1.

WEC 38 made official

WEC has announced that their next event following tomorrow night’s show will take place in San Diego on January 25, 2009. 

World Extreme Cagefighting® today announced that for the first event of 2009, the cage will head west to the hotbed of mixed martial arts - California - to hold the first ever WEC® event in San Diego. Two blockbuster matchups will lead the main card, with the World Lightweight Championship fight between Jamie Varner and undefeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone as the main event, and the mega-rematch pitting Urijah Faber against Jens Pulver in the co-main event.  World Extreme Cagefighting, featuring Varner vs. Cerrone and Faber vs. Pulver 2, takes place live from the San Diego Sports Arena on Sunday, January 25, 2009.

WEC Hands Out Post-Fight Bonuses

Following their highly praised event in Las Vegas this past Sunday, World Extreme Cagefighting has reportedly handed out post-fight bonuses to six of their contracted fighters, including bonus money for two “Fight of the Night” winners according to MMA Weekly.

WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit and his tough opponent, Hiromitsu Miura, both received Fight of the Night honors after their epic four-round title bout in the night’s main event. After pushed harder than ever before in his WEC career, Condit eventually stopped Miura with strikes to retain his belt. Bonus money also went to WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner and Marcus Hicks for their exciting lightweight title bout.

“Knockout of the Night” honors went to former welterweight title challenger Brock Larson, who dispatched of veteran Carlo Prater just 37 seconds into their preliminary bout. “Submission of the Night” went to bantamweight contender Brian Bowles who submitted Damacio Page with a guillotine choke in the event’s first televised bout. Each fighter listed above was awarded $7,500 on top of base salary.

WEC 35: Condit vs. Miura Fighter Salaries

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has released the official list of fighter salaries stemming from last night’s World Extreme Cagefighting 35 event, which took place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Carlos Condit and Jamie Varner retained their respective WEC titles Sunday night while former U.S. Marine Brian Stann was defeated in a light heavyweight championship rematch against hometown favorite Steve Cantwell. The show’s other main card bout saw rising bantamweight Brian Bowles submit Damacio Page.

Remember that this is only the base salary that a fighter received. Bonuses, deductions, and other undisclosed fees are not included.

Varner Talks Huge Win Over Hicks

WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner discusses his successful title defense against Marcus Hicks at last night’s WEC 35 show in the above video courtesy of ESPN. Varner proved that his devastating title win over Rob McCullough earlier this year wasn’t a fluke by putting on another dominating display against a tough submission artist in Hicks, finishing him off in the first round by way of strikes.

Condit, Varner Retain; Stann Falls at WEC 35

Carlos Condit and Jamie Varner retained their respective World Extreme Cagefighting titles Sunday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas while former U.S. Marine Brian Stann was defeated in a light heavyweight championship rematch against hometown favorite Steve Cantwell.

Coming into the show’s main event, Condit was expected to encounter his toughest test to date against Hiromitsu Miura, who has become known as a formidable opponent in past fights courtesy of his slick judo throws and heavy hands. Miura provided quite the test for Condit, who was put into dangerous predicaments throughout the course of the fight.

After preventing Miura’s inital judo throw attempt in the first round, Condit found himself being slammed onto the canvas just moments later, only to return the favor to Miura later on in a sign of things to come. Flurries of punches and submission exchanges between the two were prominent throughout the first fifteen minutes of the bout, which saw Condit ahead on the judge’s scorecards going into the championship rounds.

The event will feature a total of three championship bouts: WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit will make another defense of his belt against tough Japanese veteran Hiromitsu Miura; lightweight title holder Jamie Varner will make his first defense against top contender Marcus Hicks; and former U.S. Marine Brian Stann will put his light heavyweight strap on the line in a rematch against Steve Cantwell.

WEC 35: Condit vs. Miura Weigh-In Results

The official weigh-in results for tonight’s WEC 35: Condit vs. Miura event, which will take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, are below. The show’s man card will be televised on Versus starting at 9:00 PM ET. All fighters successfully made weight. The only hitch saw Marcus Hicks need a second attempt to make the 155 lb. limit.
