The Daily Recap: Cyborg Can’t Make 135, Dos Santos Partners With Nike & More

It looks like there is another hurdle to overcome before we'll finally see a super fight between Cris Cyborg and Ronda Rousey. Cyborg’s camp is saying that their fighter visited with her heart doctor and a cut to 135lbs is not safe based on her personal physical health. According to the report, Cyborg walks around at 160lbs and the cut could prohibit Cyborg from carrying a child in the future. [MMAWeekly]

Ronda Rousey’s camp wasted no time formulating a response stating that if you talk to five doctors, you’ll get five different opinions. In regards to moving up to 145lbs, Rousey’s manager Doug Harvey told Yahoo! Sports, “At the end of the day, it’s up to Ronda. I would advise against it because I would like to do everything to get Cyborg down to 135 pounds, but I know it’s the fight the world wants to see.”

Overeem & “Bigfoot” Silva Set For Superbowl Showdown

Alistair Overeem. Photo by Esther Lin/Strikeforce.

The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting that heavyweight contenders Alistair Overeem and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva will clash at UFC 156 on February 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The framework for this fight began taking shape a few weeks ago when Bigfoot spoke with MMA Junkie and said, "If Overeem really doesn't want to have to wait for a fight after his suspension is up, I am here ready to welcome him. I respect him as an athlete. After all, he was K-1, DREAM and Strikeforce champion. But I am not worried about titles or belts right now. Overeem is big and strong, but I know I can beat him. Even if was created in the lab, I can beat him."

Overeem has been on the sidelines for the past year after he tested positive for testosterone following a random drug test administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Overeem has continuously expressed his interest in fighting on the UFC’s New Year’s Eve show but the UFC informed him that wasn’t a possibility as he still has to go through the process of getting his license reinstated when his suspension is up on December 27.

The Daily Recap is a collection of news and notes from around the web that will be posted at the end of each day. Bout signings, injury news and much more can all be found here.

For those complaining about the lack of depth for UFC cards recently, the announcement of a title fight and two high-profile bouts between contenders for the UFC's next show on FOX should be enough to generate some excitement again.

UFC on FOX 5 will be headlined by Benson Henderson, who defended his UFC lightweight championship just this past weekend against Frankie Edgar, taking on Nate Diaz in a 155 lb title bout.

Also featured on the network television broadcast will be decorated veteran Mauricio "Shogun" Rua facing top rising light heavyweight prospect Alexander Gustafsson and the return of future hall-of-famer B.J. Penn against highly-touted youngster Rory MacDonald.

The show will take place on December 8 at a location yet to be announced. A fourth fight will also be featured on the main card and will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Daily Recap: Sonnen to Face Forrest at 205 lbs, Curran Suffers Orbital Fracture & More (Updated)

Chael Sonnen. Photo by Esther Lin/MMA Fighting.

The Daily Recap is a collection of news and notes from around the web that will be posted at the end of each day. Bout signings, injury news and much more can all be found here.

Two-time UFC middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen made a bombshell announcement on tonight's episode of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV, revealing that he'll be making an expected move up to the light heavyweight division and will face former champ Forrest Griffin at the UFC's year-end show on December 29.

In talking about the matchup, Sonnen praised Griffin for his achievements inside the cage and stated that he felt that he was underlooked. He also went on about current champion Jon Jones and the fact that he would be able to steal his title like "halloween candy". (Update - Video of Sonnen's announcement is after the jump.)

Sonnen and Griffin met once before at IFC's talent-stacked light heavyweight tournament at their "Global Domination" event in September 2003. Griffin submitted Sonnen with a triangle choke in the quarterfinals of an eight-man tournament that night. Not much of a surprise there.

The bout will be Sonnen's first at 205 lbs since he fell to Renato "Babalu" Sobral all the way back at UFC 55 almost seven years ago. Griffin is coming off of a unanimous decision over Tito Ortiz last month in a rubber match between the two.

The Daily Recap: Mayhem Miller Naked & Arrested in Church, No Cause of Death for Tyrone Mims & More

The Daily Recap is a collection of news and notes from around the web that will be posted at the end of each day. Bout signings, injury news and much more can all be found here.

Well, it's been a hell of a day to say the least. Let's get to it.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller was arrested today in an Orange County, California church after police found the building broken into, covered in fire extinguisher spray, various materials broken and scattered all over and "Mayhem" sitting naked on a couch. The arrest comes just a couple of days after he and UFC president Dana White got into a spat on Twitter, which ended up with Miller telling White to kill himself at one point.

I've already seen some comments from people saying that "Mayhem" is punch drunk or on drugs. It's sad. I really don't hope that is the case. And for some reason, part of me really wants to give him the benefit of the doubt here. We all know he's had a history of problems. Terrible childhood on top of being a generally wild dude for years. He's spoken openly about suffering from depression and stuff like that. Had the whole incident with his sister last year, plus more in the past.

I heard that he was in a bad place even before the Twitter back-and-forth with Dana White this weekend and now this. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with his poor showing in his return to the UFC, plus getting cut over what Dana says was a backstage ordeal caused by him. Who knows.

Either way, I hope he gets some help. It's sad to see him like this.

What’s Next After UFC 150?

Frankie Edgar. Photo courtesy of Complex Magazine.

Whether we agree with it or not, Benson Henderson is still the UFC lightweight champion and Frankie Edgar is headed back to the drawing board for the first time in four years.

UFC 150 provided us with another potential storm of controversy at 155 lbs, but UFC president Dana White is determined to move forward within the division. At this point, who can blame him? The title’s last six defenses have featured the same four fighters.

So as promised, Henderson will defend the belt against top contender Nate Diaz later this year, while Edgar faces a multitude of questions regarding his future, none more prevalent than the option to drop to featherweight – a move that would appease many.

What about the other fighters that competed in Denver this past weekend? Well, here’s a list of potential matchups the UFC could make down the line.

Video: Jason High vs. Nate Moore from Strikeforce “Rockhold vs. Kennedy” on Saturday Night

Jason High was angry after his 29-second submission win over Nate Moore was nixed from last Saturday's Strikeforce broadcast on Showtime.

He had every right to be, especially since he's probably the most worthy choice for Nate Marquardt's first welterweight title defense. Showtime was kind enough to put High's win up for everyone to see. A title shot would be even nicer.
