Sherdog: Gonzaga Still Celebrating Victory

Gonzaga did all this despite knowing how important the fight against “Cro Cop” could be to his career.

“Actually my manager spoke to me about this even before the match was confirmed,” said the Brazilian heavyweight. “We knew it was supposed to be a very interesting fight. When we signed the contract, I forgot everything else and I only trained for this for two months.”

News and Notes

- Tonight UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell will appear on HBO’s hit series Entourage. The show airs at 10 PM EST and it will feature Liddell getting into an exchange with Johnny Drama.

- In a recent interview with GracieMag.com, former PRIDE heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, provided his thoughts on Gabriel Gonzaga’s recent upset of Mirko Filipovic at UFC 70: Nations Collide.

From GracieMag:

“I saw on the GRACIE site that things didn’t go to well for the Croatian. Napão and I have never fought, not even in the gi, but if one day we are both up to dispute the belt, we will surely face each other, even though we are both Brazilians,”

“I spoke of Cro Cop and Couture for being the non-Brazilians of the moment over there, I was not underestimating Napão by any means. He is very tough, but really, based on the number of fights each has, I could not imagine Cro Cop would fall in that way. You are gonna tell me you knew Napão was going to knock him out?” he returned the provocation, with a cackle.

- It is rumored that Roridgo Nogueira will make his UFC debut at UFC 73 in Sacramento, California. No opponent has been named at this point.

- UFC Fight Night 10 will be headlined by a lightweight bout between TKO LW champion Sam Stout and UFC LW contender Spencer Fisher. Also on the card will be Stephan Bonnar vs. Mike Nickels.

- We’ve been getting hammered with emails asking when our Top 10 is going to be updated. Guess what? Today bitches!

- Various outlets are reporting that Mirko Cro Cop didn’t suffer any broken bones after getting knocked out by Gabriel Gonzaga at Saturday’s UFC 70. Cro Cop apparently told reporters overseas that only sustained ligament damage.

- The Fight Network is reporting that Jason MacDonald may take on Rory Singer at UFC 72 via their weekly “The Great Fight North” report:

Jason MacDonald has informed The Fight Network that he’ll be returning to the Octagon June 16 at UFC 72 “Victory” in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but did not name his opponent.

UFC Matchmaker Joe Silva announced Saturday after the promotion’s UFC 70 “Nations Collide” event in Manchester, England that MacDonald (18-8-0) may fight Rory Singer (12-6-0), who appeared on the third season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” but that the contracts had not been signed yet.

MacDonald previously defeated TUF alumnus Ed Herman and Chris Leben before losing to former middleweight champion Rich Franklin at UFC 68 last March.

Should MacDonald defeat Singer, the victory could further cement the Albertan’s claim to being the “TUF Killer.”

- Tickets to the TUF 5 finale are now on sale. The event takes place pn June 23 at The Palms Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
