UFC 156 predictions

The UFC returns for its third event in consecutive weeks and it's a big one - the promotion's annual Super Bowl weekend event in Las Vegas.

This year's edition features a "superfight" of sorts as UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will defend his title, welcoming former UFC lightweight king Frankie Edgar to the division. Alistair Overeem will also return to action for the first time after a year-long layoff. He will face fellow Strikeforce import Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva for a shot at Cain Velasquez and the UFC heavyweight belt.

My predictions are after the jump.

Back to the Future: UFC on Fox 6

The dust has settled following another edition of the UFC on FOX. Out of it came another promise of a lightweight title shot to Anthony Pettis, the first defense of the UFC flyweight title, the end of Rampage's days in the UFC and the coming out party for a trio of rising stars.

What comes next for those victorious at UFC on FOX 6 can only be speculated. Still, it's always fun to play the guessing game.

After the jump are some predictions on what matchups we may see in the future from this group.

In what is now becoming a yearly tradition, the UFC returns to Chicago in January for UFC on FOX 6, which takes place Saturday night at the United Center.

The UFC's latest network television special is headlined by another title fight. This time the flyweights take the stage as Demetrious Johnson defends his belt for the first time against fellow speedster and top contender John Dodson. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will also fight for what could be the last time in the UFC, taking on rising light heavyweight Glover Teixeira.

My predictions are after the jump.

Girls Night: First Impressions of Invicta FC

Bec Hyatt. Photo by Esther Lin/Invicta FC.

I have to admit that I'm a little late to the Invicta FC party.

I've read all of the hype surrounding MMA's first mainstream all-female promotion. I've been following it somewhat closely, even the controversy regarding Shannon Knapp's insistence that her product's first-ever show drew 230,000+ unique visitors to a stream on Invicta's website. Yet I wasn't able to sit down and a catch event, until now.

Sick as a dog, I was able to spend Saturday night watching Invicta's fourth card, headlined by a clash for the vacant Invicta strawweight title between Carla Esparza and last-minute replacement Bec Hyatt. I was impressed to say the least.

Fight of the Day: Patrick Cote vs. Gustavo Machado from Amazon Forest Combat II

Patrick Cote continued building a case for a return to the UFC with his fourth straight win, a first-round KO of Gustavo Machado at Amazon Forest Combat II this past weekend. Cote has said that UFC officials asked him to grab a win over a fighter with a decent record and he did just that.

The video after the jump also shows a rare lapse in judgement by ref Mario Yamasaki, who lets Machado eat about 6-8 extra shots after he's out.
