Former PRIDE welterweight grand-prix runner-up Denis Kang will look for his first UFC win in his next fight, which will reportedly be against newcomer Xavier Foupa-Pokam at UFC 97,  which takes place on April 18 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada according to MMA Weekly.

Kang, who was signed by the UFC late last year, made his much-anticipated promotional debut against Alan Belcher at UFC 93 earlier this month, but ended up falling to “The Talent” via second-round submission. The loss was Kang’s third in his last five fights.

“Professor X” comes to the UFC after spending the majority of his career fighting in England’s Cage Rage circuit. The Muay-Thai specialist last competed at PFC 12 last weekend, where he stopped veteran Kyacey Uscola in the first round with a flying knee to the body.

Former PRIDE Fighting Championships standout Denis Kang could make his UFC debut against fellow middleweight Alan Belcher when the organizations travels to Dublin, Ireland for UFC 93 on January 17.

MMA on Tap was able to confirm the bout with a member of Belcher’s camp. Bout agreements have been distributed and Belcher has agreed to fight Kang, but is still waiting for the Canadian’s response to the proposed bout.

Since departing from PRIDE over two years ago, Kang has put together a 3-2 record, including two successful defenses of his Spirit MC heavyweight title. Kang most recently scored a quick first-round TKO of Marvin Eastman at Raw Combat’s “Resurrection” event on October 25.

Belcher has won two out of his last three UFC bouts after signing a four-fight extension with the promotion last fall. In 2008, Belcher bounced back from an upset loss to Jason Day at UFC 83 to win a razor-close split decision over Ed Herman at UFC Fight Night 15 in September.

Report: Denis Kang Signs with the UFC

Newly signed UFC fighter Denis Kang

According to a report on the official American Top Team website, Canadian MMA superstar Denis Kang has signed a 4 fight contract with the UFC.

American Top Team fighter Denis Kang just signed a 4 fight deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Denis made a big name for himself in Japan and Korea fighting in the PRIDE and SpiritMC organizations, where he developed a huge following.

Denis will now be able to showcase his skills to a whole new audience who hasn’t had the chance to see this exciting fighter in action.  Denis has always expressed a desire to fight in the UFC and we are pleased we were able to help him get this deal done.  Denis will bring a lot of excitement to the 185lb division!  Congrats Denis!

This is a solid signing for the UFC.  Just two years ago, Kang was ranked in the top 5 of world middleweights before he suffered 3 losses in 4 fights.  He has since bounced back with two straight wins against inferior competition.  He is extremely well rounded and can finish a fight from anywhere.

Kang had negotiated before with the UFC, but could never come to terms as he always wanted the option to fight once a year for the SpiritMC promotion in Korea, honoring his family heritage.  With expansion into South Korea being one of Zuffa’s assigned goals in the next year or two, this signing along with that of Dong Hyun Kim is very helpful. It might be the promised chance to still fight in South Korea eventually that convinced Kang to go ahead and sign with Zuffa this time.

Former PRIDE welterweight grand prix runner-up Denis Kang returned to his adopted homeland of Korea and earned his third straight career victory over Jae Young Kim, once again successfully defending his Spirit MC heavyweight title Sunday in Seoul.

After connecting with a mix of punches early, Kang was caught by a right hand from Kim and stunned. Kang was able to recover and quickly took Kim down to the mat where he worked some ground-and-pound until Kim was able to sweep Kang and stand back up.

However Kang blasted Kim during the following exchange and dropped him before pouncing on him and finishing the fight with strikes. The win snapped a two-fight losing streak for Kang, who now heads into his scheduled bout against Marvin Eastman in October with some momentum.

Kang to Fight Eastman in October

Former PRIDE middleweight grand-prix runner-up Denis Kang has revealed that he will be taking on former IFO light heavyweight champion Marvin Eastman at a scheduled Raw Combat show on October 25th in Canada.

Kang spoke about his bout against Eastman on a recent edition of BetUS radio. Along with the Eastman fight, Kang is also slated to defend his Spirit MC heavyweight title against longtime rival Jae Young Kim at Spirit MC 18 on August 31st in Korea.

“I’m training my ass of right now,” Kang said on the show. “August 31st I’m defending my Spirit MC heavyweight belt against Jae Young Kim. A lot of people don’t know who he is in North America but I’ve fought him twice before and he’s a very tough guy. Then October 25th I’ll be fighting for Raw Combat against Marvin Eastman.”

Kang has not fought since being submitted by rising middleweight Gegard Mousasi at DREAM.2 in April. Prior to that, Kang suffered a devastating first-round knockout loss to Yoshihiro Akiyama at a K-1 Hero’s event in October 2007. Kang’s fight with Raw Combat will be the first time he has fought in Canada in close to five years.

Eastman snapped a two-fight winning streak at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale in June, where he suffered a first-round TKO loss to Miletich Fighting Systems product Drew McFedries. Eastman’s fight against Kang will be his third since moving down to the middleweight division.
