Dana White: Silva-Sonnen II Not Official, Likely for Soccer Stadium in Rio

It turns out Chael Sonnen was right, his rematch with arch-rival Anderson Silva and a second shot at the UFC middleweight title isn't set in stone yet after all. However, according to UFC President Dana White's comments today, it's almost a matter of time.

With a formal announcement likely being delayed due to logistical issues, White revealed today that UFC officials are planning on holding the highly-anticipated bout in a soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The promotion was previously attempting to secure a venue in Silva's birthplace of Sao Paolo, but rumored local concerns about noise and other potential annoyances forced the UFC to search elsewhere.

The news comes one day after Sonnen stated on Tuesday's episode of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV that "UFC Countdown" production workers were scheduled to come to his house later this week even though he has yet to sign a contract to face Silva.

UFC Targeting JDS-Overeem, Potential Silva-Sonnen Rematch for Summer

UFC President Dana White has revealed that his organization is currently looking at summer dates for a UFC heavyweight title showdown between champion Junior dos Santos and challenger Alistair Overeem as well as a potential rematch between longtime middleweight king Anderson Silva and bitter rival Chael Sonnen.

The UFC's head honcho commented on the matchups during last night's premiere episode of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV. According to White, the UFC is looking at holding the heavyweight title fight at some point in the summer. If Sonnen were to get past Mark Munoz at UFC on Fox 2 later this month, the same could be said for the middleweight division's biggest grudge match.

"Hopefully, this summer. This summer is probably when it's going to go down," White said of dos Santos and Overeem. "Alistair wants to take some time off. Junior is ready but needs to get some training in. So hopefully, this summer."

Over the past weekend, Twitter was abuzz when it was reported that UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chael Sonnen had a confrontation during the UFC Fan Expo.

“You know, I was really trying to be helpful. Anderson was signing a group of autographs, he looked like he didn’t want to be signing them and I let him know that in two months he won’t have to sign anymore because nobody will care about him again,” said Sonnen on ProMMARadio.com.

Sonnen, Maia Ready for Middleweight Clash

In the above video, former WEC title contender Chael Sonnen and skilled grappler Demian Maia discuss their upcoming middlweight bout at UFC 95, which takes place this Saturday in London, England.

Maia: “I’m Fighting Chael Sonnen at UFC 95”

UFC middleweight contender and grappling wizard Demian Maia will attempt to stay undefeated in welcoming WEC standout Chael Sonnen back to the UFC when the two clash at UFC 95, which will take place on February 21 in London, England.

Maia revealed that he had signed to fight Sonnen at the event in a recent statement on his official website.

The Brazilian remains undefeated thus far in his professional career and has been victorious in all of four of his UFC contests. Maia made his UFC debut at UFC 77 in October of last year where he made quick work of veteran Ryan Jensen, submitting him in the first round.

Chael Sonnen: “I’m Fighting Anderson Silva”

Chael Sonnen. Photo property of World Extreme Cagefighting.

Take it with a grain of salt, but Chael Sonnen has told GracieMag.com that he will be moving to the UFC after the WEC does away with it’s middleweight divison at the end of this year. Not only that, but he says that he’s fighting Anderson Silva:

You are one of the best fighters in the WEC. Are you thinking of heading to the UFC?

Truth is, after this fight I’m going to the UFC.

Do you have an idea who your first opponent in the UFC will be?

Once I’m in the UFC, my first adversary will be Anderson Silva.

Really? Has that been confirmed?

Yes, it’s confirmed. Once I’m in the UFC I’ll fight Anderson Silva. I think he’s a great fighter, but I’m only going to start thinking about that after my fight with Paulo Filho. If you want to ask me about it after tonight, I’ll be happy to answer.

Obviously the interview took place before Sonnen fought Filho for the second time last week, so it’s possible that some deal could have been worked out if Sonnen beat Filho, which he did. Still, if the UFC wants to do away with the claims that Silva is bored with his opponents these days, matching him up against freaking Chael Sonnen of all people isn’t going to help things. Silva will eat him alive.
