UFC 156 predictions

The UFC returns for its third event in consecutive weeks and it's a big one - the promotion's annual Super Bowl weekend event in Las Vegas.

This year's edition features a "superfight" of sorts as UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will defend his title, welcoming former UFC lightweight king Frankie Edgar to the division. Alistair Overeem will also return to action for the first time after a year-long layoff. He will face fellow Strikeforce import Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva for a shot at Cain Velasquez and the UFC heavyweight belt.

My predictions are after the jump.

It's hard to believe, but UFC 140 is already upon us. The event, which is headlined by Jon Jones making his second defense of the UFC light heavyweight title, emanates from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada this Saturday night.

Jones will put his belt on the line against former champion Lyoto Machida, who secured another crack at the title courtesy of a highlight-reel KO of UFC hall-of-famer Randy Couture back in April. Franklin-Nogueira Scrapped from UFC 133

Rich Franklin. Photo property of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

A planned light heavyweight attraction between Rich Franklin and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has been removed from the UFC 133 card after Nogueira suffered an undisclosed injury during a recent training session and was forced to withdraw from the bout.

The UFC announced on Saturday that it was ultimately unable to find a replacement opponent for Rich Franklin and has decided to use his services at a later date. The company's light heavyweight division has been plagued by an injury bug as of late, prompting changes in nearly every major 205 lb fight scheduled in recent weeks.

Vitor Belfort's middleweight clash with Yoshihiro Akiyama has been promoted to co-main event status and a welterweight contest between Brian Ebersole and Dennis Hallman will be shifted to the event's main card.

Ortiz-Nogueira Official for UFC Seattle Debut

A key matchup between former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz and ranked contender Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has been officially announced as the headliner for UFC Fight Night 24, which will serve as the UFC’s first trip to Seattle, WA on March 26.

Ortiz will need a win in order to keep his UFC career alive. Once a longtime holder of the promotion’s 205 lb. title, Ortiz has dropped four out of his last five bouts and hasn’t won a fight since defeating Ken Shamrock twice in a row back in 2006.

Nogueira had a seven-fight win streak snapped at the hands of Ryan Bader at UFC 119 in September. Prior to that, “Little Nog” racked up victories over the likes of Jason Brilz, Luiz Cane and Vladimir Matyushenko.
