MMA Junkie is reporting that Strikeforce World Light Heavyweight Champion Bobby Southworth will defend his title against Anthony Ruiz at Strikeforce: Four Men Enter, One Man Survives on November 16th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.
Southworth originally won the Strikeforce title belt when he earned an unanimous decision over Vernon White at Strikeforce: Triple Threat in December of last year. He successfully defended it against Bill Mahood at Strikeforce’s event at the Playboy Mansion in September. Mahood verbally submitted after injuring his ribs only a little over a minute into the first round.
Ruiz was a frequent competitor in King of the Cage and Gladiator Challenge and has racked up a professional record of 17-10. Ruiz made his Strikeforce debut last October when he was submitted with an armbar by Trevor Prangley.
Update 4:00 PM: MMA on Tap has learned that the bout between Southworth and Ruiz will be a non-title affair.
There are some pretty major changes to the card that have to be announced…
Wesley “Cabbage” Correira has taken himself off of the card due to medical reasons. The fighter he was scheduled to face, Ruben Villareal was dropped off of the card for reasons that aren’t known at this time. It is speculated that they were unable to find an opponent for him at the last minute.
Bobby Southworth will also be unable to compete at the event due to an injury that he suffered during a recent training session. Taking his place against Anthony Ruiz, will be Trevor Prangley.
Prangley was scheduled to fight Bryan Pardoe but that bout is now cancelled…
Strikeforce has announced that ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ star Bobby Southworth will be fighting on their upcoming October 7th card against Anthony “A Train” Ruiz.
Southworth currently sports a mixed martial arts record of 6-4 and he has gone up against the likes of Vitor Belfort, Sam Hogar and James Irvin. In Southworth’s last fight against James Irvin the judges ruled it a no contest as the fighters clinched up against the cage door which flew open and caused the fight to be stopped due to an injury that Irvin had suffered. Anthony Ruiz sports a mixed martial arts record of 14-9 and he is currently on a two fight win streak.
