Rob McCullough came away the victor in the main event of the evening when referee Herb Dean was forced to stop the fight in the first round because of a cut over Ryan Healy’s left eye. Nathan Diaz put Joe Hurley to sleep with a triangle choke, forcing Hurley’s corner to throw in the towel during the middle of the second round. Hurley actually woke up and then proceeded to tap but the fight was already over.
Hermes Franca defended his WEC lightweight title for the last time before going over to the UFC, submitting Brandon Olsen with an armbar. Justin Eilers continued his winning ways has his opponent, Jimmy Ambriz was unable to answer the bell for the second because of a shoulder injury. The ringside doctor quickly found that Ambriz had a torn bicep tendon.
MMA veteran Allan Goes has signed with the IFL and will become a member of Maurice Smith’s Tiger Sharks. Goes is scheduled to fight in the promotion’s fall tournament on September 9th.
Current WEC lightweight champion Hermes Franca will make his return to the UFC on July 8th at UFC 61, taking on Roger Huerta.
“I got a call from Joe Silva like Monday, so I could not cancel this WEC fight,” explained Franca. “I won my first fight in 2006 in the WEC. Scott Adams has been good to me and I have the belt, so I want to do a good job for them and fight.”

Pride announced two major signings today in the form of Vitor Belfort and Yoshihiro Nakao. Belfort will take on Yoshiki Takahashi at Critical Countdown Absolute 2006. Many recognize Nakao from his infamous pre-fight staredown with Heath Herring in which Nakao kissed him on the lips only to be knocked out by a Herring right hand immediately after.

Today the UFC announced that jiu-jitsu stars Jeff Monson and Anthony Perosh will fight at UFC 61 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This past weekend at King of the Cage: Mangler Bobby Hoffman was slated to square off against Wes Sims. Unfortunately for Sims, Hoffman proved to be a no show forcing KOTC to sever all ties with Bobby Hoffman.
It seems that King of the Cage will be stepping off of that roller coaster, finally severing ties with their former champion. Said Williams, “We’re done with Hoffman. We are now severing ties with the Bad Seed.”

Just over one week ago Ryo Chonan went to war and won a split decision over Joey Villasenor. Unfortunately for Chonan, he suffered multiple fractures around the orbital bone. The severity of the injury at this point is unknown but this may force Chonan out of the second round of the Bushido Grand Prix which is set to take place August 26th.
